Depends on the size jig. Both will catch fish.I feel more comfortable with the larger hooks and wouldn't go smaller than the #6. Larger hooks are more likely to penetrate the roof of the mouth instead of the lips. Imo.

I would rather die finding out there was no God than die finding out there is.

Are you minnow fishing or jig fishing?

Minnows, I prefer a 2/0 to a 4/0...and IPrefer the tru turn style hooks.

Jigs, I fish 6 in heavy brush and tangles...and 4 in more open situations.

If you are fishing larger profile baits, 2.5 or 3 inch baits, the #1 is a good choice.

So, I guess the answer to your question is...It Depends...

Thanks Mac, I couldnt really tell, from his question, so I just thought, I would expand it a bit...let him tell us, what his intentions are, and maybe sorta point him in the right direction, at the same time...

Minnows I use a #6 baitholder hook. Jugs, it really depends on the size jig body. I make my own heads so Ill customize the hook to my bait. Almost exclusively fish 1/16 in spring, summer, and fall summer when Im using a 1.25 bait, Ill use #6 hook. When Im fishing 2-3 baits Ill use #4 or #2, whichever I have handy. Winter is a different ball game and Im usually using a 1/4oz jig head with a #1 or #2 hook

.

Interesting choice on the minnows, a bait holder, instead of a light wire hook?

So, it sounds like you are sizing your bait offerings to the size of the shad throughout the year...

Thanks to you all, I mostly fish with minnows. Have had better luck with a little larger than a #6. I have some hooks that have a little twist in them and they good. Thanks again

Interesting, I grew up fishing a 4/0 or 3/0 light wire hook with minnows...we always considered anything less than a 1/0 or a non light wire hook, to be heresy....lol, next time I am in a hook store, I am going to look at that #6 baitholder again...but I swear I tried that option years ago...and was chastised by my elders for prematurely killing minnows because I used a hook with too large a shaft to keep a minnow alive...something along the lines of ...son, baitholder hooks are for dead bait, like shrimp, liver, or dog food and light wire is for live bait, like minnows and crickets...or you aint getting in the boat with me until you learn whichhooks to use for which bait...my elders were pretty comical with the things they said, yet they were always dead serious when they said it! roflmao
