I bought a 10’ rod yesterday and am looking forward to verticle jigging for crappie this winter. I don’t fish in wind that is more than about 10 mph. Would a 1/8 oz jig be about right for most winter depths? Or would you use 1/16 oz in the shallower brushpiles?

I normally always start with 1/16 jig heads. But you might run into current. If you are fishing brush. I would go to a 1/8 jighead to try to stay vertical. If I am fishing a bridge pilon I normally just use two 1/16 jigheads. Just my 2 cents

I fish 1/8oz. jigheads almost exclusively. I'm impatient and can't wait for a 1/16 oz. to fall back to it's intended depth.

I/we fished 20'-24' fow brushpiles this weekend. I used 1/8 oz jighead, but would have used a 3/16 or 1/4, if I would have had any handy.

Big Eye pill shaped heads sink fast and cut the water very well - 1/16, 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4 oz available.

This time of year I will generally go 1/8 ounce jig. I will fish 1/16 and occasionally 1/24 if fishing shallow with little to no wind

SIRJET, I’m fishing out of a Pelican 10e plastic pontoon boat. I doubt you would want me to take you out.

While I have you guys talking, another thing I’ve been wondering about is whether some of you guys verticle fish for crappies with a light baitcasting rod. I saw a guy on YouTube using an 8’ casting rod and talking about why he liked it. Just wondering if it is very common. I assume spinning rods are king, but thought I would ask.

Just a personal preference. I fish spinning for vertical and casting presentations. My spider rigging rods are casting.

I’ve tried both. I just prefer spinning rod and reel. Casting to me just seems too bulky and awkward. That being said you just should try both and go with what is most comfortable and instinctive for you. It’s a matter of personal preference and confidence honestly.

Good morning Slowdown. I perfer a spinning reel. Due to the line just comes off easier.
