I didn't know this but maybe some of you did. I was told that boat gas was not subject to all of the road tax that is placed on each gallon of gasoline since a boat does no damage to the roads. You can apply for a refund each year for a portion of the fuel tax you paid while putting gas in your boat. It probably wouldn't add up to a lot for someone like me but it could be a chunk of change for a fishing guide. Anyway, here's a link to the form needed. Anyone chime in that has experience with this.

What do you mean by boat gas? Where do you get boat gas? How would they know the difference it you put it in your boat or your truck? I'm not being a smart arse, I've just never heard of this. Are they considering boat gas marinas on the lake that you can only pull up to via boat?

Any fuel you use in a vessel (and some other categories, like purely off-road vehicles) is exempt from highway taxes.

When I submit my reimbursement claim, I sometimes have to provide proof that I own a boat (copy of title card is adequate), and have been asked once for copies of my receipts showing the total number of gallons pumped. I always keep boat fuel receipts in an envelope in the console of my truck and mark them "BOAT FUEL".

When I lived there, mine was around $45. Enough for one tank. And they do add up the receipts to make sure the total matches your claim amount.

I'm pretty sure that a lawnmower fits in this category also

Any fuel used for offroad is tax free. But you have to file for the refund.

How would they know if you are being dishonest? I'm going to start keeping all my receipts.

Well, if you're trying to claim 100 gallons a year for a 14' aluminum jonboat with a 30hp motor, you're probably ok, as 2 gallons a week is realistic.

But if you try to claim 1,000 gallons a year on that same boat, they might say something.

Started doing this couple of years ago gets me about a tank and A half of State of TX pd gas. Need to keep all receipts in case of audit though. Think the rebate is like .23 per gallon.

The receipt must also show the number of gallons, as this is what is used to calculate your refund.
