Hi,

I have a MINN-KOTA 55 Edge trolling motor, and I was told that I have to use a very specific (Minn-Kota MK110P), very expensive, battery charger to charge the battery. My charger when kaput, and my trolling motor battery is dead.

My question is, do I HAVE to have this specific charger to charge this battery, or did the salesman pull one over on me? I don't know why it should matter on a standard battery? I don't want to spend the $ on another crappy charger that will just go kaput in another year....

Thanks!

I'd say no.

I don't think the kind of trolling motor has anything to do with the type charger. The type of battery will determine the type charger. The AGM type batteries usually require a different charger or one that can charge both AGM and wet cell batteries. Best advice is get a good charger, not a cheapo. Here's a helpful link of battery basics.

Just get you one of the xps bass pro chargers. I had one for 8 years, and when it went out, they exchanged it for a new one. Don't need a special charger. Used the xps for my 24v edge 65lb, now use it for my min Kota Maxxum 65lb. Get the on board charger, plug it in after a day fishing, when it says "go fish", I unplug it till night before I plan to fish again. Keeps batteries good and walmart batteries last about 4-5 years.

Slaphappy, you didn't "Used the xps for my 24v edge 65lb" - you used it for whatever battery you had. Trolling motors do not "need" a charger folks, it's the BATTERY!
