I've alway used 1 1/6 jig heads because that's what I was taught to use,And not understanding when to use a smaller or bigger bait.Recently I started using 1 1/8 size heads and it seem to be a more aggressive bite.
I also thought I had better control of the Jig...A TFF'er just told me to order some small jig heads as well....
Gotta step up my game,and start trying a few more techniques...

I have always found I do best with as light a jig or jigs that I can keep straight down at the depth and fishing conditions I have that day.

The rule to any kind of fishing is use the less weight as will do the job. The more weight the better the feel for what's going on. The less the weight the better playing the jig. Don't fish the heavy jigs with lite-tackle as it bends the rod and you don't have the feel you need. Same with bigger rods and line using the lite jigs you have no feel for it. Just a matter of getting what fits you as none of us are the same.

Since I use mostly hand tied jigs 1/16 jigs are the perfect profile for me, if the wind is a problem I just add a split shot... When barge/slip fishing the 1/32 works better for me...

When using my 7ft Rod I think that 1 1/8 balanced well...

I generally use a single 1/16 oz jig head with 6lb hi viz for my setup unless I`m fishing deep(30+fow)then I go to a Tandem 1/16 oz jighead with 6 lb hi viz or a 1/8 oz 6 lb hi viz for my setup unless it too windy then I go to a Tandem 1/8 oz jig head with 6 lb hi viz for my setup or a 1/4 0z jig head unless I`m fishing in brush then I go to a braided line with a single 1/16 oz jig head for my setup unless I`m fishing deep brush (30+fow)then I go to a braided line with a 1/8 oz jig head for my setup unless it`s too windy then I go to a braided line with a 1/4 oz jig head for my setup unless it`s in Winter the I go a 4lb hi viz line with a 1/32,1/48,1/24 oz jig head for my setup unless........I`m at home then I just go to the freezer

I use 1/8 majority of the time. Heavier jig gives me better feel for the jig and the bite. And I can usually get the heavier jig un-hung easily. There are a lot of variables to consider; rate of fall being very critical at times. A 1/8 hand tied with large chenille and full tail will fall slower than a 1/8 with plastic. When I use plastic, I'll use a lighter 1/8. Not all 1/8 jigs are created equal. Finding what the fish want on a given day is key. If they are feeding, the 1/8 will work great and get you to the strike zone much faster, especially if the fish are deeper. And the 1/8 works better for me fishing timber. However, there are days when they get stubborn/finicky and the 1/16 will yield bites when a 1/8 won't. I rarely go lighter than 1/16, and that's usually in the winter on docks. A 1/8 shooting docks will give lots of distance but the rate of fall is entirely too fast. Got to have a good assortment of sizes for these finicky fish.
