Taking the wife to Tyler this (rainy) weekend to do some pre-retirement recon on possible retirement homes or a weekend getaway place. Other than exploring via Google Maps we're really not that familiar with the immediate Tyler area.

What recommendations do you have for "Sights to See" and "Places to Visit"? I plan to take her to Gladewater to look around and shop a bit, and we'll probably visit a few local lakes, maybe bank or dock fish a bit.

Also, any recommendations on ideal locations for a vacation home to launch fishing trips to the many lakes in the area?

Thanks in advance for your ideas...

Tight lines!

I have lived here all of my life and really cant think of stuff to see or do! Usually, the wife and I go to Dallas to do stuff! If you go to Gladewater, might head a little more north to Gilmer. I think its time for there annual Yamboree festival!

pretty good eats to be found, some decent shopping, but not a whole lot of anything else.
For anything else we usually go to DFW or Houston.

The fact that it is fairly quite but has strong medical and growing university resources are the main attraction. Look for paces south of loop 323 that you can afford to stay and you will probably be fine.

If all your Lake touring makes you hungry for fish or seafood, find a way to swing by Chandler. There is a place just off Hwy. 31 called "Wade's Place" that has the best seafood this side of the Gulf. Super good and very well priced. Easy to Google for directions but you really just have to look for the tin building with a ton of cars.

Take a ride to Tyler State Park, it'll be beautiful this time of year. Other than that there is no reason to visit Tyler, It is Redneck City. If you're thinking of retiring there, think of somewhere else, the traffic in Tyler is worse than in Dallas.

Thanks for the input, folks...

We spent a couple nights at a hotel on the south side near Loop 323. Friday was mostly a washout with all the rain. We arrived in town about 2pm and had a late lunch at Rick's on the Square, which was pretty good. The wife wanted Mediterranean for dinner, so we went to Athena's. Other than that we pretty much just drove around in the rain for a while and tried to get our bearings.

On Saturday we:
- Went to the Village Marina at the Holiday Inn Club on Lake Palestine. Nice facilities and maybe worthwhile for a weekend stay with a boat if I wanted to fish Palestine. Wouldn't consider buying into the timeshare membership, though.
- Next went up to Gladewater so my wife could look at the antique shops and see if she could find a tea room (nope). Nice little town with an interesting history in addition to a lot of antiques. Had lunch at the Central Station Brick n Brew, which was also very good.
- Drove from Gladewater to Lake Tyler and visited the Lake Tyler Marina Resort and The Boulders at Lake Tyler. The folks at the Boulders are pouring some money into their property, and I think it'll be a real nice place to stay once they open their cabins, probably after the first of the year. They're sponsoring a big fish contest from their barge and boardwalk, which is currently being led by a 9lb+ largemouth (not sure about catfish). I like the looks of the lake and plan to give it a shot in the future.
- Didn't feel much like eating after the hotel breakfast and lunch in Gladewater, so we grabbed a salad at Chick-Fil-A and called it a night.

On Sunday morning we visited the Tyler Junior College campus (wife works at Tarrant County College and wanted to compare notes), then hit a Rose Festival craft show at Bergfeld Park. Visited the Villas at the Cascades at Bellwood Lake just to see another option for a weekend getaway spot and then hit the road to head back to Fort Worth.

Overall, we enjoyed the visit to Tyler. It's not someplace we'd probably want to retire to, but some of the outlying resorts and RV parks have possibilities as a weekend getaway spot. We'll continue to look for spots in East Texas for potential retirement or vacation home locations.

Again, appreciate the inputs. If you have any suggestions of future spots for us to check out, please post 'em up!

My wife and I have rented a cabin at Caddo Lake the last two or three years. We love the lake and the area is on our list of retirement spots. I run a Ranger RT188C and the location works for day trips to several area lakes. Check it out if you get the chance.

We chose our retirement home on Lake Palestine a few years ago. We had spent pretty much our entire working life in downtown Houston. It was a welcome relief. For us, we wanted something of a little bit slower life but still wanted to be close enough to shopping, restaurants and, most importantly, adequate medical facilities as we age. Lake Palestine fit the bill. There are things to do around there, ie: Canton First Monday, etc. And theres always some kind of corny festival on the weekends going on somewhere.

A few notes....
Lago del pino is an awesome venue - food not so much...
Check North:
Lindale is close. Cool music venue there. If you like golf Hideaway has 27 holes. Right off I-20
Mineola has a cool little downtown, kinda like gladewater. Love going there with the family for a movie and burger on friday. Close to lake fork - check out Lake Holbrook, Hawkins and Quitman as well. All have houses on the water. One of the only places in the state with "county lakes"
