I went striper fishing on Texoma several years ago and had one of the most pleasurable fishing experiences I have ever had when it comes to quantity and size of fish. It was absolutely awesome. I was in a large boat with a couple buddies and I remember the wind being unpredictable and chaotic. This was in early November. My question is do any of you know of any areas on Texoma that are more kayak friendly that produce fish? We were by Shepard Annex and it was like the Barren Sea when we got into open water. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks! Tom

I have fished Texoma a couple of times, but it has been a while, so correct me if I am wrong.
There are several places that you can put in, but HighPort Marina is free to kayakers. Just need to put a sign on your dash that says KAYAK. From High Port there is a string of islands that will produce fish. Probably be good to at least have a contour map if not a GPS fish finder.
Hopefully others with more experience will jump in with more info.

Lake Texoma is a fickle mistress when it comes to weather and fishing. I have had days where you could barely stand up from the waves and caught a fish every cast and the opposite of that and still catching. While on other days the fish just won't bite with the same wind and weather conditions.

Pay attention to your solunar charts and weather and try to fish when it is prime on both if you are taking a kayak. Watch the fishing reports on Six Old Geezers and try to find launch sites that allow you access to the productive waters.

I made several trips to Texoma in my kayak at the end of spring/beginning of summer this year, putting in at the dam each time. I got there early enough to hit the topwater bite one morning and it was fun, but there was zero wind. Once summer rolled around there were too many boats down there for my liking. I paddled west to the Eisenhower bluffs as well. All the striper I caught were down by the dam or along the points heading to the bluffs.

You're correct, the wind can be brutal out there. Even when you're on the south shoreline the wind gets funneled through the slots that create the bays and make the water rough. I always try to watch the weather and go when it's supposed to be calm. I've never launched at High Port, but might have to; the islands seem as though they'd break up the waves.

I had two sailboats on Texoma in the early 80's. The weather in the Red River Valley is almost totally different than the D/FW area. So much so, that the NWS weather radio system broadcasts a different forecast than D/FW, even though it's only 80 miles North! Fronts come from Oklahoma, South over Lake Texoma, and don't quite rise up out of the Valley, and BACK UP, into the oncoming front! When that happens, it's a guaranteed blustery storm. One Memorial Day Weekend, we had a 90-mile per hour storm on Friday night and a 125-mile per hour storm on Sunday night! Always be aware of the weather on Texoma. Listen to the NWS broadcast for the Red River Valley. The valley, from Wichita Falls, to Shreveport is called "Tornado Alley" for a reason. Lowe's Highport gets hit by storms VERY, VERY, frequently. The islands West of Lowe's Highport are interesting. I never fished there, but we used to pick blackberries on one of them in the Summer. I'll bet the South part of Big Mineral Arm, down close to Hagerman Wildlife Preserve would be great fishing. Don't know any launch points, but a call to Cedar Mills Marina might get you some info. Catch 'em up!

Went once and we launched at Eisenhower State Park.

Some decent protection from about any wind direction in there. We were able to get sandies, stripers, largemouth and smallies in there. All we needed for the slam was a spot but neither of us could get one.

We went outside the marina toward the dam and even though it was a "calm" day the water did get a bit rough. The lightest breeze makes it tricky for a yak.

Was out there this weekend. Depends on you and your kayak if it is kayak friendly or not. To really get on them you need to be able to get out on the lake. There are no protected areas but some are what I guess could be called friendly. As said above from the dam down to the state park can be productive. Around the islands from high point is another spot. Also you can find them in the state park coves and just outside the yacht club cove. There is always a stray fish or two but using electronics can help from wasting time in these areas. If you see them stacked up thick, fish it.

I make several trips a year there, especially late fall through winter ( seems to be a whole lot less boat traffic ) Cedar mills boat ramp is not free, I believe it is still 5 $, but the people there are great and I feel safe leaving my vehicle there. The striper fishing can be awesome just outside of the Cedar Mill marina heading south/southeast in the winter. Caught most of my larger fish there during the Christmas break, its no a bad peddle or paddle to the 377 bridge from there either if the wind isnt roaring. good luck and hope this helps.
