Took advantage of the lack of rain this morning. Over slept as usual, but loaded up the kayak and headed up to Lake Somerville to check out the upper Yegua Creek a bit past 6:30am. The water was flowing and the carp and gar were exploding everywhere you looked. I wasn't expecting a very productive trip. I just wanted to get out since I haven't really had an opportunity to head out, and every weekend has been plagued with rain. Weekdays are tough to get out due to work, so I take every opportunity I can take. The fishing was productive, tons of small bass, crappie, and white bass, needle nose gar, and a HUGE CATFISH that I caught while drifting a small jig. Catfish slipped off the jig before I could land the beast and take it's picture. Fished for about 4 hours and headed back home to Cypress. I'd be out there again tomorrow, but with rains headed our way, I think I'll sit tomorrow out and maybe hit the ponds around here with the fly rod.

A nice day on the water is any time you can get out!

I think the section below the lake you are fishing is typically referred to as the lower Yegua. The creek at the northwest end of the lake running through Lake Somerville State Park , (Newmans Bottom) , Irwin Bridge & the WMA would be the upper Yegua..

Great post, that doesn't look like the Yegua to me. I think that is another creek. I won't mention the name though. Surprising to hear you were catching white bass in the creek. That's a great sign.

Thanks for the report.

OOPs, nevermind, I recognize the point on the Yegua you are fishing.

They have opened the boat ramp at Nails Creek so access to the Yegua is just a mile up the lake.. Newmans will be closed for a long while yet since the flood really did a number on the trailway and both parks.. Let me know if any of you can manage a trip or two up the creeks some time soon and I'll try to join you.. I may be able to pull a weekday/weekend early morning trip up the Yegua or Nails. I can't get to far from home or work for a while longer but will chance it on occasion..

Now that the gates are closed someone needs to paddle up to the railroad bridge and see if there is another massive fish kill.

I'm pretty sure we are well past the usual timeframe (September- early October) for major fish kill due to O2 depletion. If there is a die-off it might be due to overpopulation.

Haven't seen or been by this area since late September. Let's hope the same hasn't happened this year.
