Hi all, I'm looking at taking my kayak below lavon dam this weekend, can you offer any tips on how to fish it? FYI have used my kayak maybe 8 times total and never been to the spillway before. I know not to go past the pilings, and was also told by a bank bound friend that goes there to paddle to the opposite side of the current, tie on to a piling, and fish the bottom and outside edges of the current with 1/2 jigs/swimbaits, slabs, and big roadrunners. If you have fished there before can you give me any tips on the spot?
Thanks,
Eric

Haven't been but I watched a Youtube video by a kayaker. You might check that out if you haven't already.

There are a couple of Lavon regulars on here that should be able to provide some info.

I'm tuned in. I built a pirogue this year and looking for a few opportunities to get it out.

Zach that's legit! Kudos to you I'd never want to take the time to build a boat

I've been told you cannot launch a kayak (or any boat) from the parking lot next to the Lavon dam?

I don't know who told you that, but people do all the time. You just aren't supposed to go north of the rail bridge columns.

They have been generating a lot lately and you don't want to take your yak there when they are running water.

only 3 out of 12 gates open now, so it's not bad. I've seen people out there with lots of gates open. If you stay close to the rail bridge you'll be fine. At that point, the water is boiling, but it's not pushing hard downstream. If you get too far south of that bridge with all the gates open, you might need someone to come pick you up at Ray Hubbard.

Here's the spoken of video on youtube, by me. Check it out! It's great fishing, I hear the hybrids are there, unconfirmed report though. I haven't been since I put up the video.

The trip down to the water from the parking lot is the most exciting. Even if you can carry it off the ground it is still rough to get back up.
You might want to take a look for crappie also up against the banks on downstream. I have heard some rumors. Jig 18" under a float drifting a foot off the bank at most.
Let us know how you do.
Tight lines, Phill
