What are you using for a cart. I refuse to pay $50+ for a yak cart so I want to make one. I've got a dolly that I can steal the axel and wheels from so really I just need a design. Quick search here and on youtube bada bing bada bang and I've got info on how to throw one together. So really question is... to build a through the scupper or not... Also, what size dia pvc did you use?

Scupper carts are WAY easier to move yaks on. Only thing is, the scupper holes are a weak point on many kayaks. Some manufacturers say not to use them.

I have a C-tug that works great but that came with a kayak I recently purchased - no way I'd spend that much on a cart!

I did buy one from Academy for $29.99 that works fine.

I called THEM and they said that the Pescador would be fine to go through the scuppers providing your pvc extends up through the scupper. He said something about the Pescador has a 1 piece scupper construction that made it more durable.

@superslab.. Is that difficult to get into position? Does the yak want to jump off when you hit a bump or do you strap it down.

That's not a bad price for sure.

Okay, if you are going to build one for yourself, not hard to do, I would highly recommend you review this man's assembly for really good ideas on building one of high quality.

Else, you can cobble one together pretty cheap with PVC pipe and some wheels.

But, back to a really good job, scroll down a ways on this page and you'll see how one kayaker made his.

XFLYNNx - the cart is not hard to position if you place it closer to the center than the rear of the yak where the bottom is flatter. You can also cut and put a pool noodle on the cross bars to make it fit the contours of the kayak better.

I considered making one out of PVC, but looking at the time I'd put into gathering up the components and putting it together, I thought it was just easier spending 30 bucks and being done with it.

I picked up the pvc tonight for $11 and change, already had everything else. We'll see hkw it goes.

Yes, that man really built a cart that seems to actually exceed the quality and functionality of most commercial ones.

It just goes to show that there are so many things that we can actually build ourselves, with the right tools and time, that greatly exceed the quality of the some of the stuff sold commercially. Some of which, by the way, teeters on being embarrassing.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised in there are many out there, who if their thoughts on kayak designs could somehow be magically translated into engineering drawings, that we'd even see great and innovative strides there, too.

Any expensive kayak, in 2016, should have some means built into it to handle a cart. What, beefing up a few scupper holes, something as simple as that, would be a big deal?

My great preference would be for something like the Boonedox Landing Gear where we walk the kayak down to the water, flip them up and back, fish, then float back to the bank, reverse them back down, walk back to the truck.

It'd give us another hour or more of fishing. In doing so, it would further enhance one of the great advantages of kayaks over boats . . . the ease of usage would be magnified.

Well I went with making my own cart. Total after tax expense was $25. Used multiple 20% off coupons for harbor freight on the wheels as they were the most expensive pieces to be had. Simple common design off youtube. Took 30 min to cut and assymble, total time to glue and paint 1 hr tops.

I've since cut the handle down to 24" and painted it to match the rest. My .02, if you build your own, do use the extra T and put a handle in the design so you can lift yak with one hand and roll cart under with the other. I saw vids with and without. Using 1" schedule 40 and buying a 10' section, I had almost 5' left over, so you've got plenty material to use for the handle.

All I've got left is to zip tie the noodles into place. She works great and turns on a dime. Concerned about the longevity or durablility, but I reckon if I don't slam the yak on it then I should be good for a couple years anyways.

You are so correct about the handle to lift the kayak into position, then slide the cart into place.

It makes a difference. It would then be nice to be able to hook the handle to the transom area with a band or something so that it rides up and out of the way until you finish rolling it.

For $25, even if you get 3 or 4 seasons out of it, that is a bargain.

Big wheels cover sand easily. Foam filled wheels never go flat.
