What do you fellas with short truck beds do to support you yak? I've got 7' with tailgate leaving 5' of yak hanging out the back. I was thinking about ripping a 2x4 and making my own extender. I'm guessing if I get T style extender out to about the 9' mark I should be fine.

You can buy THESE... I just don't feel like spending $60+ on it.

I bought the same one you linked and it works great. I did make one out of 4" PVC but it was a pain to use. The extender works better.

I haul my Slayer Propel 13 without an extender, with the same size bed. I just run a strap through the side handles and hook each side to the bed. It works great, unless you have a good amount of weight at the protruding end.

Or if someone hits you from behind. You will get ticketed. You could get ticketed just for having it stick out that far. A real bed extender, a set of those magnetic lights made for towing dead vehicles or old travel trailers and saving your the head aches and possible costs is worth a few extra bucks.

I was more worried about almost half my yak hanging out, maybe it putting too much stress on it, thus using that extender. I figured as long as I hung a red tshirt or something off the protruding end I'd be good.

I'll post pics as soon as I get something thrown together.

Boy, sure is pretty out there today, wish I wasn't stuck in here pounding on this keyboard.

Most come with red flag you attach to keep you legal.

You can get them off ebay for $58 with a red flag.

I see a lot of people using the extenders. I would go ahead and spend the money to get a good one. Chances are you'll be a kayak angler forever, so might as well have a good one!

I've been trying to figure out what to do about mine, my truck doesn't have a receiver hitch on it. Any ideas?

Buy a hitch or get one of those "hitch plates" that you can screw into your bumper so you can use of these extenders. Like this one: Bumper Hitch Plate

If you have more than 4 feet of overhang and want to get technical and be perfectly legal, you'll need lights and/or reflectors at night and, at a minimum, a red flag for daytime. If you can secure the yak without a bed extender, there is no need to waste your money. The amount of overhang is from the rear of your vehicle, not the extender. I use a red flag only night and day and have not had any issues. If you want complete peace of mind, get some lights.

As LSM stated, there are some laws that apply to this which have been kicked around here a few times. Part of the problem is they are not real clear as to their intent. I use a extender with lights that can be seen from the back and sides, I also use a fed flag during day light hours.
I would recommend you take a look at the law and not let anyone talk you into something.

A red flag only covers you out to 4' of overage. Anything past that you can, not necessarily will, get pulled over for.

(Texas Transportation Code 621.206)

A vehicle or combination of vehicles may not carry a load that extends more than three feet beyond its front or, except as permitted by other law, more than four feet beyond its rear.
Subsection (a) above does not apply to vehicles collecting garbage, rubbish, refuse, or recyclable materials which are equipped with front-end loading attachments and containers provided that the vehicle is actively engaged in the collection of garbage, rubbish, refuse, or recyclable materials.

So what happens the first time you hit an unexpected dip in the road and your hull warps because there wasn't any support past the tailgate?

Get an extender, do it right with some lights and a flag.
