Looking to take the kayak out next Wednesday and wanted to try somewhere different. I pass Pat Cleburne on the way to Wheeler Branch and always say I need to try it out so I figure now is as good of a time as any. Any recommendations on where to start, spots to try or avoid, etc? I plan on getting in the water around sun up and fishing until about noon.

Looking Google Earth I can see that there is a ramp on the East side on the main body but I also saw what looks like a gravel road and a dirt ramp on the north end just off of 67. Is this a viable place to launch from or is it private property?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sheepdog,

I used to occasionally see a kayak or two on Pat Cleburne Lake off of 67 on my way to Wheeler Branch . . . but can't say much about fishing it. One kayaker on Wheeler once told me that it used to be a decent lake.

However, just a bit farther down the road, you can go to Cleburne State Park and it has a lake, Cedar Lake, that is popular with several kayakers on this board. It costs $5 to enter as I recall, very clean and a popular camping lake, generally a nice crowd and a nice ramp and parking area. Fishing? Not great based on anything I have ever heard but bass and crappie, etc. are caught there. There are some brush piles known to others here, that and a dam with some rip rap to fish.

A good lake for a kayaker, not nearly as scenic or as clear water as Wheeler Branch, but few lakes are.

Brad

Sheepdog: There is a ramp just on the west side of the 67 bridge. Good parking, good ramp. From there, you can fish the north end of the lake, and also fish up the Nolan River a mile or so. Decent bass fishing, but I never caught any over a pound or so. Just South of the bridge, there's lots of reeds and other cover. There is a ramp on the west side, but it's been closed for years. You can pull up next to the oilwell site and put your yak over the guardrail, and drag it to the water. Pretty nice fishing area close by. You can't park there, but park by the old ramp.

The Cleburne Bass Club is active. They might have some pointers.

I fish there a lot in a kayak. I only fish that upper river end during the colder times. The water tends to get really warm up there plus there quite a few snakes and man I hate snakes. I can almost always be found fishing the rip rap on the dam. Its good shelter from the south wind. Most ski boats will give you space as well out there. Try square bills early then I will switch to something a little deeper depending on where the fish move. Normally they will just slide down the dam into deeper water and hold there. If they will hit a crankbait and I can get to the bottom to deflect of the rocks at the depth they are holding I will fish that way. If not a pb and j or black and blue football jig or something on a c-rig is my next go to. Its a good lake but gets a lot of pressure from bank fisherman that keep a lot of solid fish on the east side of the lake. You might also find some sandbass along the east side as well schooling this time of year. I always launch from the old ramp near the east side of the dam. I usually have it to myself.

Never fished Pat Cleburne but Cleburne state park I can tell you is tough fishing.

Yeah there are fish there but man its a beating.

Better off to go to Wheeler or about anywhere over that joint.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like we are going to use the ramp on the South East corner, near the dam. Plan is to hit the rip rap and the west shoreline. Google Earth looks like it could be decent depending on water level. Will update if it was a success or fail. Either way, I'm going to be on the water and not at work so its a win.
