I'm planning on fishing brazos next friday. ( my birthday is Wednesday so kinda a gift to myself) but I have not a clue in the world where I can launch any input would be nice I wanna see some pretty scenery but also catch a bunch of ditch pickles any input would be great thanks!

I wouldn't recommend going if they're letting water out. Make sure you're watching the flow gauges on the river

I would definitely have yourself a plan B with all of the rain we have coming through this week. The lakes are full and I wouldn't be shocked to see flood gates dropping...

Flow below PK currently shows to be 9000cfs with rain expected every day through Wednesday. I've never seen anyone successfully fish while white water kayaking so I'd recommend a nice lake trip.

just my opinion here, but I'd try the section below Whitney Dam (which is way too fast to fish right now) or the section below PK (which is likely to be too fast to fish this week). For the future, Whitney tends to be better fishing, at least for me. Also, you have Dicks Canoes as a good shuttle option and take-out about 8 miles below the dam. Good luck and be safe. As stated before, don't go until you've checked the flow rates.

I'd be careful with the way they were generating below Whitney. It will go from nice to 6000 cfs in a blink. Its not fun I found out the hard way because basically I'm hard headed sometimes.

Yeah I'll probably just end up taking a rain check on that til it's nice and calm. At first before I knew it started at PK(which I just learned yesterday haha) I was looking down by college station I figured it wouldn't be raining down there I hadn't check yet but yeah I'm prob just gonna wait or go to athens if it's not raining my gramps owns some land in athens in a community called waters edge they got a small lake I hear is stocked idk if anyone knows what I'm talking about but thanks for the input

Shoot me a pm if you ever want to fish behind pk. I know the river well about 12 miles down behind the dam. I have a contact at the bra I can usually get info on what they're doing with the gates 3-4 days in advance. I fish a lot alone so I don't mind having some one tag along

I feel better now that I'm not the only one. It was the first time they started doing it on the weekends for us. Schedule before that showed no generation and yes it's no fun at all paddling against that kind of current. It's a beating!

True story with my CrAzy mishap....I kayaked Lake Lavon two months ago. I did not pay attention to the flood gates flow rate and opted to fish the dam after watching a kayak fisherman's video on youtube (I think it was YakMan's kick butt video of kayak fishing Lake Lavon Dam).

I arrived early in the morning around 7am. I saw (4) gates opened with a lot of water flowing through like white water rapids on the Colorado River. Still, because I wanted those darnnnnn sandies, I wanted to make my way across the channel no matter what. I hauled my kayak to the dam channel and may the attempt to cross.

The water was soooo strong that it kept me from positioning my kayak correctly. I eventually flipped my kayak over. The flood gate waters carried me a good 200-400 yards down channel. Fortunately for me (PFD on hand ALWAYS), I new not to panic and relied on my military training for situational awareness. Held onto my overturned kayak and let the current carry me away. Eventually, drifted to a calmer washout point and collected myself for my trip back up channel.

At the time of water flood gate release (7000 CFS). Never again will this happen! Be safe brotha from anotha!

Now that is what is called Lucky escape. Pleased to read you had your PFD on and you hung onto your kayak and that you are safe. Even with the PFD on getting caught on timber and dragged under by the strong current would have been a different result. Thanks for sharing.

Holy cow!

We only had about 1.5" of rain here in Victoria this week but the Guadalupe has risen 11 feet and going up another 6'. River flow is around 7600 right now and will rise to around 12000 Thurs and Friday. All this coming from upstream. Don't just bet on the rainfall in your area but upstream too.
