Not sure if everyone already knows this but it was news to me. Gene Jensen aka Flukemaster made a very helpful video about pitching from a kayak while seated. I haven't tried it out yet, but it definitely seems like it will help me out.

Casting from a kayak took a little bit to get use to when I first stated kayak fishing. Since I have stated fly fishing that put a new twist to casting but I have that pretty well down. One important thing when fly fishing from a kayak is to have the cockpit clear of just about everything. Because as you know in a kayak with limited room you will get something tangled up. Thanks for the video it certainly will give me something new to work on.

I like Gene's videos. One thing interesting about him? He has fished for a very long time but I believe he had never caught a double digit bass. So, he got the kayak and was shooting an episode in it early on and, boom, he catches a DD and his biggest bass ever.
That ought to make a convert out of him, if nothing else does.
Rick, that is a good idea: clear the cockpit for room to work rod angles for casting/flipping and pitching, etc. At first, one would automatically assume that we are at a disadvantage, and in some cases like making really long crankbait casts, we likely are. But, being low to the water, we should be able to make casts that drop in lower and quieter, and we can simply get closer in to our target areas to begin with.

Good tip. This is why I find myself standing more than sitting. Easier for me to cast, pitch and better leverage on hook sets.

I have found that using 8 foot pitching specific rods helps a whole lot with accuracy and hookup ratio when pitching from a seated position in a kayak. That being said its kind of a one purpose rod and that kind of sucks. Seeing as how 95% of my fishing is done flipping and pitching reeds here in Lubbock I think it was worth the investment. My hook up ratio went up dramatically when switching to an 8ft rod. I am sure that the combination of the power, length and angle of hook set all contributed to a better hookup ratio. I also think it helped with a more stealth presentation as well. Another thing that helped me a lot was taking my seat out of my kayak and practicing pitching in the front yard into a cup of water. The neighbors and occasional joggers might look at you funny but just wave and ask them if they want to try it. You never know might find a new fishing buddy.
