Hey guys I almost have my car rack for my kayak finished , I was wondering if anyone has a tip I can use for putting an alarm on my kayak for when I stay at a hotel . I want to use a metal cable with a lock but do anyone of you have any idea for an alarm ?

I can't speak to an alarm, but I couldn't bring myself to trust a steel cable to keep my kayak safe. They can be cut with a pocket knife or a small pair of pliers.

I went to HD and bought a chain and some electrical cable flexible tubing to keep the chain from scratching my car. I run this through a scupper hole and through my front and rear windows, around the frame of my car. Padlock and its as safe as I want it for a short while.

Quick trips into the store and I trust it, anything longer it wouldn't take someone much to snatch it right off the roof of my car.

If it were me, and I would just stay in a MOtel and bring it into the room with me. blush

People either ignore or sleep through alarms these days.

Park in a well lit area close to the manager's office/front door if possible. Cables/chains through the scuppers.

If I had an expensive kayak, I'd get a double room and the kayak would sleep on the nice bed.

I've seen locking straps advertised with some kind of an alarm system built in, but I don't recall where I saw them or how loud the alarm was. Apparently if the strap is cut it triggers the alarm. That might be what you are looking for, if they still make them and if they work as advertised. I use cable locks and park where there are lots of people around. Generally, if I am overnighting with the yaks I am in an RV park and the boats are on a rack over the cab of my truck. They would be a lot of bother to get to.
