A pretty good day for me getting on the water early and fishing until 2 PM, about an hour longer than I usually allocate for fishing on hot days. I caught 9 or 10 total, can't remember which.
Regulars Tom and Gary and others were out, too, but the lake certainly wasn't very crowded on the water. The heat really runs folks off.
Most important to me today was a second trip down to the dam, where I flipped my drop shot rig on the outside of some vegetation and a nice SMB, as it turns out, pulled itself back into the weeds and I just sort of held on statically and the fish came out on its own. About 17" long, and it looked like it had been fried in butter: a deep brown/caramel color. Beautiful fish and a first for me. Pound for pound, a much stronger fish than a LMB.
I still haven't caught a walleye.
On the way out after I loaded up, I told David at the little entrance office what my results were, left and as I walked out two young kids, one was 12 I believe I heard him say . . . were walking up, huffing and puffing. I thought quickly, gosh so out of shape for kids that age, then I looked again and realized one of them was toting a really huge bass - - about from his shoulders down to the kid's knees. Looked 10 lbs. to me and David took a photo of it so I suppose it will be posted on the wall. It could be the largest LMB taken from this lake. I have never seen one that large.
There you go: with various yak accessories I was in a $2500 kayak, with a $400 rod and reel, a couple of hundred bucks in state of the art fish stuff . . . then two kids catch a 10 pounder with likely a $30 rod and reel from the bank.
It's suppose to be this way.

The Rod and Reel may have only cost $30.... But that fish just cost that boy a ton of future money! If he wasn't hooked before, he is now! (No pun)
You're right, that is how it should be... Great story!

Great report, Brad. Congrats on the nice string, and especially for the Smallie. The kids probably were using a safety pin for a hook too!

My buddy called and said he stopped on the way out to check about the fish and they actually weighed it: 8-6, so not quite a DD . . . but I think right at or near the lake record.
It looked huge being carried by a 12 year old, that is for sure.

Sounds like you had a good day at Wheeler Branch. I am looking forward to catching a smallmouth and a walleye there soon!
