They look for shade wherever they can. They will also just sit around in the shade. Think about it like this... If you were outside and it's 100, where would you go to be as comfortable as possible? I know I'd go for shade anywhere I can find it. That's pretty much what the bass are going to do. During the peak hours of heat they will be lethargic and not very eager to move around. This is why they are more active in the early morning hours such as first light and right before the sun goes down and a little after. The water has time to cool off a little making it more comfortable for them to feed. The algae usually provides cover for them as well as oxygen. I've caught plenty of bass sitting right in the middle of that yucky stuff.

No doubt its a tough time for pond fish...but if you stock them properly, manage the numbers and fishing pressure, and have some weeds and other structure, they will do just fine.
I have had ponds for over half a century though some of the worst droughts in Texas history and the only fish kill I ever experienced in summer was hybrid striped bass....a fish I never should have stocked in the first place because of their relative high temperature intolerance.
The algae isn't all bad...provides some shade...but my ponds have zero algae due to the presence of Tilapia...which absolutely thrive in the hot waters.
