I've been fishing braided line for several years now with a fluro leader. After watching salt strongs's YouTube video abrasion comparison. Why would I use expensive fluro when test after test proves Monon was better? What are yalls thoughts on the test?

It depends on what you want out of your leader. Fluoro has very low visibility, less stretch / more sensitivity, and sinks. Mono floats and has more stretch. For example, I may use mono for a top water bait or c-rig for more shock absorption and less sink. I may use Fluoro for a dropshot or shakeyhead in clear water and I want more sensitivity.

Not sure how the test was run but at Falcon last week we had 20lb Invisx hung in rocks and had to use the boat to break it. If mono is stronger I'd be surprised.

Those are good points. My thought were the indistry including pros have been advertising fluro because of the greater abrasion resistance. When in fact mono is better in that field. I have done some test at home and fluro still stretches quite a bit. I would rather have the better abrasion and a little more stretch when I'm flipping pitch etc. We all have high quality rods to pick up maximum sensitivity so does mono make that big of a difference in the end on that matter? Just some thoughts. Big price difference

Fluoro has been pumped up by marketing. I don't use it bass fishing at all. Tried it and just didn't like the way it handles and I didn't feel like I was getting more bites. I really like braided line for my worm and jig fishing. I don't even use a leader. I never had any problem feeling fish with mono but I like the fact that you get a much better hook set with the braid. The only time I use any flouro is while trout fishing as my fly rod leader/tippet in really clear water.

I use Big Game for 95% of the stuff I do. Floro and braid occasionally for specific stuff. It's all a marketing gig for what ever is the flavor of the month. If you're a serious tourney fisherman depending on that check to make a living I can understand taking every advantage. For your average Joe weekend fisherman mono does the trick and it's cheap.

Mono most of the time. Braid when I'm in sticky situations. Fluro never.

If I was rich and had infinite time, I'd use flouro and re-spool all the time. I like it's lack of stretch and lower visibility. But when it gets nicked, it breaks easier and it costs way more. I grew up fishing mono, went to flouro when I got back into fishing 10 years ago, and have slowly migrated to where Big Game is all I use anymore. The only place I feel like I'm sacrificing anything is on bottom baits like jigs, worms, senkos, etc. where the no-stretch flouro gave you a little better feel of the bite. But it's just not worth the cost and hassle to me. I have lost more fish due to flouro being nicked than I have gained due to increased sensitivity.

I've been a serious fisherman for quite some time now.ade the switch to braid several years ago due to the line lasting longer and the better sensitivity. I almost always use a leader but have been using fluro. After seeing the results of the abrasion test between mono and fluro I will be going back to a mono leader. I was lead on by marketing that fluro had a better abrasion resistance and if it did I would continue to use it even though it is more expensive. I will be saving money now and using a better product for what I use it for. Just found it very interesting that the old cheap stuff is tougher. I fish tournaments and I want the better product for my needs.

Agree, if I fished tournaments, I'd use braid to fluoro. But fluoro requires a lot of babysitting (gets kinked and nicked easily).

I use braid to Pline CXX copoly for most applications--it's not as stretchy as mono and for me has slightly better sensitivity. It is slightly more expensive.

I do like 25lb Big Game leaders for pitching extra thick brush. Once Big Game mono gets to 25lb test, it's not as stretchy.

Mono was better for "his" test. Look up other tests and you will find different results on both sides of the arguments. Not really any definitive tests you can do other than fish them and choose what works for you. There are no industry standards on the manufacturing of fishing line so comparing them in a controlled test situation is really just gonna end up opinion based anyway. Try them both in same situation then choose what you like.

Using the line that you have the most confidence in is what really matters. I use fluorocarbon for 90% of my fishing applications. I like fluoro because it's virtually invisible, even in clear water, and I fish a lot of clear water. I like the sensitivity of it as well. I feel confident using fluoro. I do use mono for topwater, and spinnerbaits & some crankbaits at Falcon. If I need to get my crankbait deeper there's no way I'm using braid or mono. I'm gonna use fluorocarbon because it sinks. Yeah sure, fluoro doesn't have the best abrasion resistance. Just retie and go about your day. Monofilament definitely has it's purposes in my arsenal, but so does fluorocarbon.

What exactly were they testing? Because sensitivity is the main reason I use floro. I have not used mono that has near the sensitivity that floro has. I use floro for just about everything but it is a must for jigs and anything I need to feel every bump on. I can get away with mono for spinnerbaits and things like that but still prefer floro. Floro is pretty strong unless it has any knicks in the line. I check my line every few casts and re-tie often.

I use Fluorocarbon line (Invizx) for quite a few different techniques from 10-20# test and don't have issues with it at all. I like the sensitivity of Fluorocarbon. If you just do not want to go with fluorocarbon line I would suggest P Line CXX. It is very strong, low stretch, very abrasion resistant, but it does have some memory issues. It is fairly thick per the #test rating on the box compared to other lines so when I buy it I go by the line diameter of it rather than # test rating. Another good one is P Line Premium. It isn't quite as strong as CXX but it has way less memory. If you just want to go with a monofilament line, I would choose Berkley Big Game. I like a co-polymer line better than a monofilament line because I think they are more abrasion resistant. McCoys Mean Green is another co-polymer line that I have had good luck with.

I use braid for top water frogs and on my spinning gear and that's about it.

I used to never buy flouro and alwayed used big game. One day my buddy got hung using 17 invizx, he couldnt break it. I pulled the boat around and we ended up having to wrap the line around the net handle to break it. After that I was convinced. I was unhappy with flipping with the big game because the memory is so bad. I would stretch it before every use and before mid day on the water it would be unmanageable. Use a Palomar knot with flouro and be cautious with the knot tying. You have to take care of flouro more than mono but I feel the strength and less stretch is worth it.

I think both mono and flouro are strong with their respective pound. Big game is tough I just prefer flouro for more of my applications.

As far a braid, I love to use braid in dirtier water. I live around Abilene and most lakes are murky enough you can get by with braid. I havent gotten into the braid to flouro leader. I just use one or the other. I also back my reels with cheap mono to save money. With my flipping reels will only spool about 45 yards of braid/flouro. With my cranking reels I spool around 80 yards.

Invizx and super slick braid is the only line I have used in the past year.
