Hey everyone...longtime browser of the site, first time posting. My Dad and I are headed to Mazatlan, Mexico next week to fish Lake Picachos for 3 days with Ron Speed Jr. outfitters. They've provided us info on lures (types/quantity) and customary tipping amounts ($20/per fisherman per day for the guide, same for the camp manager. Seems cheap...but honestly I have no idea.

With that being said, I've never been on a bass fishing trip like this, especially out of the country. Has anyone ever dealt with this particular outfitter? Any advice/suggestions on anything from lures, to tipping, to our safety? Thanks.

I went 3 years ago...had a great time. The camp is great and the food is first class. Most of the guides were knowledgeable and hard workers.
We tipped the guides 20$. The fish should be a lil bigger now..we caught alot of 2-4 pounders...no giants...monsoon hit before we got there and the lake was flooded...fish were scattered.
Have a great time...you will be well taken care of.

It is a short trip from the airport, 45 minutes or so. You will catch a lot of fish. Little fish but a lot.

Yes, and you're going to have a blast! Lake is pretty brushy so take plenty of hooks and sinkers. I gave up on tungsten about halfway through the first day and switched to lead weights. I also fished a bunch of weightless baits like a Senko just to cut down on hangups. Make sure you get a good heavy rod out of their stash to flip with. If you drink beer, Pacifico is the way to go. First day I had 85 (bass not beer) by lunch.

I tip a guide in Mexico just like I would tip a guide on Fork; especially if I caught big fish, they went above and beyond the call to duty, or the were just great guys. I typically tip my guide around $40 - $60/ day sometimes more, sometimes less. They spend around 8 - 10 hrs. with you, and work their rear ends to the bone -- literally.

i was there the first week of december, el salto for a few days and picachos a few days. during that trip picachos was really on, we would catch 30 to 40 fish on top waters at sun up, mostly on a chug bug. once the sun was up we threw wacky rigged senkos and trick worms, texas riigged senkos and lizards, shakey head trick worms, a few crank baits and deep swim baits. each day we (2 anglers in the boat )caught nearly 200 fish. the majority of fish were 3 to 6 pounds, at times you would hit a school of 14 inch fish, but our guide would move on quickly,

good luck

Ron Speed's camp on Pichachos is awesome.. There is little to worry about when you go with them.. Except running out of baits.. Any soft plastic will catch fish.. Some better than others.

Take some Senkos, Plum Ol Monsters, and Zoom Kudzu Mag Lizards..

The camp there is the best I have seen on the Mexican lakes.. Private bedrooms and big living areas, and coldest a/c you can imagine.. Great outdoor dining area overlooking the lake..

The service there has been awesome and the food is great.. Alcohol and Cuban cigars are included in whatever quantities you desire.

Good equipment on the water. Not aircraft carriers or rocket ships but good fishing express boats. And they have rods out the wazoo..

PM me if you have any questions.. I have been several times..

I go to Mexico yearly. Headed to Huites on Monday. We use the $20 each as a benchmark and tip more if we are really pleased with that days guide, but not more than $30. FYI, you will have a different guide each day. The first year we fished Picachos was the 2nd year it was open and the guides were very green, subsequent years, they have gotten better. Enjoy, you will have a great time.
