Probably a dumb question but Ive been graphing fish lately in 15-20 FOW. I drop a waypoint and then circle around to drop a buoy on the mark. I go back and fish the spot and maybe catch a couple then nothing. So I drive by and scan again and the fish are gone. Is it possible I am scaring them driving the big motor over the top of them to drop my reference buoy?

More likely that you're scattering them after catching them.

Don't drop the bouy on the fish. Drop it about a cast away and line up with something on the opposite bank. The big motor can spook them but I don't find that it does normally. I've noticed once schools get pounded on they will scatter or shut down after a few get caught. You have to really slow down or just leave and come back in a little bit

Only time I find bass schooled up like that is if they're feeding and they're on the move so that's probably what's happening. I've had pretty good luck getting on top of them with the bow graph and drop shoting. Could be sand bass or stripers you're graphing too.

Feeding fish are after the bait. Driving over the fish using Down Scan and Sonar scatters the bait fish. Therefore the Bass scatter as they are working the school of bait fish. 15 to 20 ft is your magic depth for finding fish that are relating to a contour and moving up to feed. Use Side Scan and keep the boat at 25 ft out and around these irregular features on that 15 to 20 ft contour. Even at that I have found you are allowed one pass. If you circle back and continue to look in order to make your decision to fish or not disturbs the fish. Depth finders do not tell the whole story. When I have a contour with irregular features that should be holding fish; I make this one pass from deep water. I already know this contour has the features needed to hold fish from doing mapping work at home. If you see a couple of fish shut it down and get to fishing.

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.

So you drive over them (1 time)
Drive back over them (2 times)
Throw a buoy on them (3 times)
Fish for them (4 times)
And then drive back over them and they are gone (5 times)

5 disturbances in 15 FOW, that's the answer.

I'm with Donald Harper, a good contour map has put 10 times more fish in my boat than sonar
I'll pick a new spot to try from map study, drop a way point on it, decide how to fish it before I get close, approach it quietly as possible and fish my way in
When I happen across fish or something that looks good on sonar I drop a way point circle out wide ease back close and start fishing my way in , I'll have my marker buoy laying on the deck and as soon as I get the first bite I'll drop the Buoy right off the nose of my boat and pick something on shore to line up with so i can make that same cast again and again
I found a big boulder setting off a long narrow main lake point , there's nothing else around it just one boulder the size of a pickup , Every winter when I can catch the wind right on a good sunny afternoon I can set up on that boulder a catch fish after fish off that one rock , any other time nothing
If you find spots like that make notes of Time of day, wind speed and directions, temp, Sun position and boat position , it can pay off later fish

More then likely they are just moving. If bait stay in one place they will get demolished, its in there best interest to move. So the fish move.

Also a group of fish may just stop eating and then move away from the bait.

an HB 360, Lowrance spotlight, or Panoptix can be very valuable in that situation.

If your throwing a moving bait the fish could be following it back to the boat

If at Fork turn the electronics off after you marked them and dont get right on top of them. Had the same happen so started turning off electronics and problem went away.

The extra step of making a waypoint and then marking it with a buoy seems inefficient and as stringwise pointed out you're driving over them more than you need to.

Have a buoy ready when you're graphing an area. When I see a group I want to cast to, I throw the buoy off to the side or upwind- I put the buoy where I want to cast from. Then I kill the motor and circle back with the trolling motor and hold the boat next to the buoy. I use my track on the graph to know what direction to cast to if it isn't obvious by landmarks.

I got lucky and was a co angler with Darold Gleason being the boater. Yeah for me. He fished several good places. But he had a few schools out deep in drop offs. He said to me thats where your gonna catch your fish. Lol I caught fish everywhere but hammered them there. He would drive in circles over the drop offs and as soon as he went Over a school he immediately backed up and we threw to them. He had a little trick to get them biting. I wont share the spot or his trick. I was curious I asked how come they dont spook after we go over them and back up he said cause their 25 deep. If they were shallower they would scatter. Super nice guy.

So.....if I get to within a boats length of shallow fish, they swim off.....but a boats length over the top of them and they stay? Hmmmm
