I grasp the concept of a channel swing. I can see exactly what they look like on google earth images of lakes during droughts. However, how do I find them while on the water? That’s where it gets lost on me? What would it look like on my graphs? How does the shoreline help me locate them when near the shallows? I’m lost!

sometimes they silt in and you won't be able to find them. The only w at ive been able to do it is running down and side scan with the map running. I look for the channel on the map, then idle around until I find the drop with the graph. its hard to describe, but you'll know it when you see it.

I think I understand that. Is the drop the inside or outside of the swing?

There will be a drop on the inside and outside of the channel swing, best way I can tell you to find a swing is by using the chart on your graph. If you have a flat or a point close to a.channel swing it will generally be better imo..

Don't overthink it. Also, don't expect the map to be super accurate.

I do mapping all the time. The best way is to go back in time and take a screen shot of the section you would like to know more about. Once you have that screen shot on your desktop go to PAINT and label the things you feel are important like: rocks on the bank of the creek - stumps - bends in the creek and etc.. Then go out to you boat and drop the symbols on the spots that means something to you for each of those things.

Almost ever creek channel in the backs of every cove is miss marked by Nav. Apps.

I was on Google Earth this weekend but for the life of me I could not find the option to go look at past images, go back in time? I used to do it but since they’ve updated it I can’t find out where the option is.

Yes desktop, on the top left choose the tool bar, then slide over to view, then choose historical imagery, and it's free!

Google Earth Pro is the easiest way to do this for most lakes.
On a few lakes (very new lakes) ; caltopo.com can work better.

Going back in time to severe drought conditions and/or using the topography overlay function can be very useful.

(google search "how to add topographic maps to google earth" )

A channel swing is just a sharp change in direction of a creek channel. On a graph it will likely just look like a ridge and will simply drop off. The only way you would be able to see it in a static graph image is if someone ran right beside it on side-scan. It can be 'faked' by turning the boat near a simple creek channel drop. You simply have to follow the channel as straight as possible, looking for the quick direction change.

I have the Pro version. I can see where there is an overlay in the add section on top. I do not see anything about adding topo maps.
