Early fall top water bite getting ready to start @ LOZ. Got a half dozen new 130 Whopper Ploppers from TW on Labor Day sale. What is best rod action for the 130 Whopper Plopper?

I am throwing them on crankbait action rods. The 90 series on a Dobyns 704 CB with 12 Lb mono and a 6.2:1 reel and the 130 on the 8' Dobyns 805 CBRM with 30-50 lb braid with a 7:1 reel. In my mind these are still treble hook baits and need some forgiveness in the fight. The braid allows for good hook sets on 80-90 yard casts which are possible with that 8 ft rod and a good reel. I throw them on a 7ft MH Ugly Stik--The guides aren't very good, but that rod has just about the ideal action for a 130 whopper plopper.

Normally throw them on a 7' Lews Speed Stick MH. Same rod I throw all my topwaters on including frogs. With braid I add a 3' length of 17' flourocarbon to give a little stretch.

A 7ft to 7ft6in crank bait rod should work just fine.

UPS truck brought WP's today. They are pretty heavy. My Crank Bait rods are Crucials 7'6" medium. Got a couple Crucial 7'2" MH Spinnerbait rods, tips are some what soft. Think I will try the Spinnerbait rods. Might have to buy a couple MH crank bait rods next TW sale if the Spinnerbait rods are to tip stiff.

I feel a MH is too heavy for trebles because I rip the hooks out (I also set the hook very hard lol probably my problem) but I like to use a M moderate action rod.

I am a dobyns fan so when I was looking for the perfect rod for the WP 130 I called them. They highly recommended the champion 764c which was a rod I never even considered. Well I bought it and never looked back. Awesome rod!

MH, with a fast tip.
I fish it on braid. Most fish for me come on a slow, steady retrieve and always seem to be explosive, like the bass is trying to hurt the bait.
It's just plain fun when they're hittin' it.
