I have been throwing a 7 ft MH foot that is rated for 3/8 or bigger. I have been throwing a ton of 1/4 oz swim jigs in thick cover and I seem to be back lashing a lot. Is the stiffness of the rod affecting my casting. If I change to a lighter rod will I be able to pull fish out of cover? Suggestions?

I would go to a MH rod that is rated for 1/4 oz baits. Lots of them out there. That way you keep your stiffer rod back, but have a fast tip to be able to set the hook.I use Dobyns, but you can probably find a rod in your lineup of rods that can handle it. Here is a link to the Dobynd Chamion XP rod I would use, a 704.

OR a Dobyns Fury rod if your on a budget.

Hope this helps. Look around, there are quite a few MH rods that are rated for 1/4 oz lures. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Good advice, already.

One other consideration is going to a rod that has a moderate action instead of fast or extra fast.

A rod like this sized for a 1/4 will cast better, less issues with backlashes.

And, since a moderate action rod bends closer back toward your hand, its lifting point in other words, you'll have much more leverage (really less bad leverage) over your fish and should be able to haul it out effectively.

7 footer, okay, MH as long as it is rated down to 1/4 oz., okay, moderate action.

Brad

Get you a 3 or 4 power rod depending on the manufacturer and a Daiwa Tatula SV TW. I would also choose a rod that is 6-8 to 6-10 in length if you are also skipping that swim jig.

A lighter action rod will help, also is your reel adjusted properly?

I think so. How should it be adjusted?

Rod for sure can play a big part of your cast but don't forget your size/type of line and reel.

Are you back lashing while the lure is in mid air? 1/4 ounce is still on the lighter side, so I would definitely be fine tuning your spool tension

You need a rod with good tip action for the lighter weight and your reel set up is very important. Start out with the jig barely dropping from the rod tip when you press the thumb bar. If the reel has magnets on the left side start out with the magnets full on, or at the highest number. As you get better you can adjust it lighter.
