What do they do to the waters or fish that makes them so bad? I haven't fished a lake with them.
Cast it, reel it, jerk it.

They grow on your boat in a matter of hours, they get in your livewells, they plug up dams, they grow on docks and they will cut you up. Very easy to transport!

I have seen Texas fisherman who have claimed positive effects in lakes that have had Zebra Mussels.
This could be one of the biggest con job TPWD has pulled on Texans to date, but time will tell.

Didn't at least one lake in north Texas get them and start to get really bad then the water started getting clear and their population start to recede?

I'm no biologist, but from what I've witnessed the Zebra muscles they are not thriving in our lakes. Initially Texoma was bad, every stick in the lake was covered and broke off regularly fishing baits down in the rocks or brush piles. I haven't experienced this in the last few years, and have never seen it on any other lakes. I will continue to follow the guidelines TPWD has laid out, it's not a sham, the Zebras are an invasive species and they are simply doing their job to educate and get ahead of it.

Its funny to me that they are in Lville and the powers that be act like when the water flowed over the spillways for weeks that the larva did not go over as well.... Every lake stream and pond that even remotely touches the Trinity from Ray Bob to the coast has them now. Just a matter of time till they "verify" that.

They clear the water up and make the fishing better. Initially this is true. The great lakes fished awesome for a while. Now there are two problems: 1. The zebra muscles filter feed on small food bits the Alewife population also ate. Now the Alewife population has plummeted and along with it the King Salmon population has been decimated. 2. You used to be able to crush smallmouth on the great lakes in the 8-12 foot range, now the water has gotten so clear (20+ feet of visibility in a lot of places) those same fish now take up residence in 20-30 feet of water. Outside of the spawn they can be downright difficult to locate and catch in many parts of the great lakes. Moral of the story here is be careful what you wish for, it's all fun and games until you wind up having to fish 30 feet of water with a Ned Rig on 4lb line to get bit.

I don't see that being an issue on most of the lakes in North Texas, they are just too dirty and sandy or mud bottom. Maybe a Lake Texoma could see something like that, but other lakes like Lewisville or Roberts won't every get too clear.

What do they do to the waters or fish that makes them so bad? I haven't fished a lake with them. It's not just about fishing. The zebras will stop up municipal water intakes, power plant intakes, the mechanical works on dams, not to mention what they can do to outboard motor cooling systems.
Snowflakes and entitled brats will be the doom of America!
