It has been a long time since I have fished Fayette County Reservoir. I remember in July and August, the bass used to school on top, chasing shad. Do they still school? Also, I have a new boat on order, and would be willing to trade a trip or two to Falcon, for someone to update me on Fayette. I'd like to fish with someone who is currently on top of things at Fayette, but not have to pay a guide fee. In return, I will show someone Falcon. Actually, the same goes with Choke Canyon and Coleto Creek. I need current information on these lakes as well. My boat should be ready in mid July. I can also trade some shallow water kayak redfishing in redfish bay and Corpus Christi bay. I certainly am dialed in on that. Thanks

I fish Fayette atleast once a month. They still school out there but it just hasn't been as much as they did about 4 years ago. You will mostly see a few fish come up for a few seconds and then they are gone quickly. Fayette is still pretty easy to fish. Since alot of the grass is now gone the fish seem to be more rock related for me than they used to be. Especially come summer time. Find some offshore rock and its game on.

That is interesting. What happened to the grass? You mean Hydrilla, right? They used to lower the lake in the winter to keep it under control. It used to grow out to, and sometimes matt up to, 10-12 feet deep. Thanks for the advice about the rocks.

They spray the grass I think. I miss fishing that lake. My favorite which is no secret is the intake area, that drop from the flat is killer with a shakey head or a crank bait, I've never had a fish hit harder then when that crankbait comes over the ledge. Caught a 7# on a crank there, pulled like a freight train.

Offshore is key this time of year all the way through fall.

I fish crank baits, jerk baits, and a shakey head mostly out there. We normally average around 25 fish a trip. sometimes more, sometimes less.

I don't see near as much schooling by bass as 15-20 years ago, and that goes for pretty much all lakes I fish. I think the reason is that water isn't as clear as it used to be, and the reason we don't have as much clear water is because so much of the vegetation that keeps it clear has been killed.

In all the tournaments I fished last year, meaning about 20, the only real sustained schooling activity I saw was on Hawkins...which also happens to be the clearest lake I fished.

Years ago when I used to fish Nacogdoches and Pinkston regularly it was commonplace to see several large schools busting the surface every day. Those lakes were full of hydrilla. Coincidence? I don't think so.

We used to go to FCL every year just to catch the schoolies but haven't done so in about 5 years. The fish were big and they seemed to stay up much longer than other lakes like Bastrop.

Fayette used to be really clear when it was full of hydrilla. That's when I fished it. The schooling could be incredible in the summertime. I am headed back to that lake again soon at this stage in my life, so I will have to relearn it. Maybe since the bass have no hydrilla to live in they gang up on offshore stuff? I used to wear them out on community ridge...

You can still whack'em pretty good at Fayette if you know the places to fish (not hard to find) but I haven't seen big schools in the main lake in a long time. Used to see them out by the jetty in deep water back when there was a lot of hydrilla. Once the hydrilla began to vanish, if you could mark some of it off secondary points on your graph and verify it by snagging some, you could catch fish off a clump of it for hours.
