I've fished with guys that have high end rods and reels and couldn't catch a cold in Alaska, and I have fished with guys who were excellent sticks but can't afford the high dollar gear. Top of the line gear definitely makes a huge difference in catching and presenting lures properly. That being said it's more about the hand that holds the rod than it is about the gear. When you start catching fish with shoulders you will quickly feel the difference.

A Yugo will get to to work. A Cadillac will get you to work too just more comfortably. Either way you can get to work. If the Yugo is what you can afford you are still blessed with being able to go to work. :-)

I will say that the H2O Motive is a good reel but I broke the tip off that Cherrywood rod when I hit the water. Good reel, bad rod. My 2 cents.

For 24 bucks, if you get a season out of one, you made out pretty good!

Hey NTX, I enjoyed your video. I like your easy-going narration and editing. I like the concept of reviewing inexpensive fishing gear.

I made out good at Academy the last couple weeks. Before Christmas, I picked up a couple AllStarTeam split grip casting rods for $20 each. Last Wednesday, I bought two Motive (for some reason, I pronounce it Spanglish: Moh-tee-vay) baitcasters for $25 each. That is two great combo for less than a hondo! I already own a Motive, so now I have three. Academy clearanced them, so that could be the end of this reel.

The 18 month-old Motive shows its age. I bought it on-sale and I've been very happy with it. It became my topwater reel and I spooled it with 12# Big Game. The high gear really helps with topwater fishing. I caught an 8# LMB with a Super Spook Jr and the drag performed excellent. The finish has boat-rash that shows the dull yellow plastic beneath. The gears are noisy. In early December, the one-way clutch failed, but I flushed the anti-reverse bearing out with brake-cleaner and it performed flawlessly today.

The only fish I caught today was with a Cherrywood spinning rod! I normally don't take spinning gear, but it works good to cast the little yo-zuri. The first fish of the New Year!

Still have a barely used one in the attic somewhere if the heat didn't melt it.

I have 9 reels that cost anywhere from 135-300.00 (when I bought them) and they are going to last forever. But...I'll admit my most fun fishing has always been when I bust out the cheap ultra light combo. (I do seem to buy a new one every year though..lol..)

IMO, that would depend on what you look after. Some people would spend 200 to buy a shirt while others cannot afford to do so. Not everyone has a deep pocket. I could be happy with a $60 gear if I get some nice fish. Inexpensive reels sometimes can hold up, if used in a right way.
