I have been using the palomar for a while like most people, but I feel like my hook is always falling over and moving around. I found This Video of a dropshot knot. I have tied it and it holds the hook much more secure, but I am not sure how strong it is. Has anyone tried this one?

Just out of curiosity, when you tie your palomar, do you run the tag end back through the eye of the hook and down for the weight?

I use the palomar exclusively for drop shotting. Also, make sure the knot comes through the eye of the hook after I run the tag end back through. It's harder to get the knot to go through when you're using heavier line and smaller hooks, but it'll stand straight out if you can pop the knot through the hook eye.

I run the tag end back through the palomar but my FC line (high dollar) sometimes breaks right at the hook after fishing it awhile. Any solutions?

This is exactly what I do and it works very well. 12# test Invizx will go through the eye of a #1 Owner rigging and 15# test will go through the eye of a 1/0 Owner rigging hook.

I use FC line, too. I make sure to wet the line before cinching down on the palomar. I also pull from both above and below the hook after I get the knot below the hook to test the strength of the setup. I usually don't need to retie during one outing and often catch 25-30 fish on a single tie. It will break over time, but is pretty reliable.

You have to make sure you tie the palomar knot correctly. If the double line crosses over the eye of the hook, it will break. The double line must be parallel on both sides of the hook eyelet. Also make sure the loop tightens down between the eyelet and the knot instead of in front of the knot on the main line.

I do run the tag end through the eye and put the knot on the inside of the eye.

I run 8lb flouro leaders and like to nose hook my baits where the point is still just inside the plastic.

It'll keep the hook standing out for a while, but after a while it ends up vertical again. I use the light wire roboworm hooks so it is the length of the hook plus the weight of the bait at the end of that that'll eventually bring it down, but I would prefer if it always stayed standing out.

I use a palomar or a world's fair knot.

Try a Stand out hook with a palomar knot on 10 lb big game with a 6 lb to 8lb flouro leaders

Get the stand out hooks or the spin shots. They are so much easier and you know your bait is standing out

To the original question about the other version of drop shot knot in the video, I have tied it several times and it works pretty well. Why? It puts barrel wraps both above and below the hook eye to stabilize the hook; and, like a Palomar knot, it leaves a long tag end down to the sinker so any slippage is of no consequence (too far to slip apart). The knot isn't going to "pull loose" though it could move down the line a fraction of an inch or so I guess.

But, the advantages of any Palomar knot, tag end pulled through or not, are that it has two strands of line encircling the hook eye instead of one and that the ending bight (loop) that is pulled over and around the hook itself at the end and then tightened down . . . is the equivalent of an immovable anchor.

A Palomar knot never pulls apart as many other barrel wrapped knots do on occasion. And, it rarely breaks in the eye of the hook because the tension there is shared by two strands and not one. It would be like chinning with two fingers on each hand on a chinning bar instead of one on each side. The stress is divided between the two.

I'd perfect the Palomar knot with the extra passing of the tag end back through the eye, learn how to stick that hook straight out. Often, on the water, it might take just a second or two between casts to tug the hook back in its proper position.

Use the other knot as your "second string" back up . . . what, a Tony Romo knot?

If anyone can remember the knot Eddie Garret uses on fork it would be a good one. I know it was really simple, quick, and it withstood the pressure of some big fish. I just can't remember the exact knot,
