Anyone use mono for all applications? Can't believe there is much difference in sensitivity and mono so much cheaper. Of course I know you would still use braid for punching.

I am moving in that direction. Just so tired of breaking fluoro.

mono worked just fine 30 years ago. still seems to work ok for me. and i don't need to get a loan to re-spool. I use big game for pretty much everything i do. I try and keep things simple.

The sensitivity, for me, is significantly better with fluoro on weightless presentations. I haven't seen much benefit of the lower visibility properties of fluoro in most Texas waters.

That being said, I like Pline CXX (floats) and Pline CX (neutral buoyancy) copoly better than any mono and most fluoro that I've tried.

I use mono most on most applications, I don't see the difference for the price. I do use braid from time to time

I used it a dozen times or so, had the same problem.

I quit using mono a long time ago because I think a co-polymer line is better for any technique that I used to use mono for.

I also use fluorocarbon and braid for specific techniques.

Use the right tools for the specific job.

Braid for spinning gear because it has nothing but advantages, leader if I want it for visibility reasons.

Braid for heavy cover/topwater

Flourocarbon for bottom contact baits, and also on my single hook moving baits, so jigs and plastic rigs by default but also spinnerbaits and bladed swimjigs, and on my when throwing a rattletrap

Mono for anything else with treble hooks

There are exceptions, but those are my general rules. 3 factors to consider are bouyancy, abrasion resistance, and sensitivity. Outside of that, visibility is a last consideration but as mentioned, mostly a non issue in Texas fisheries.

To anyone having fluoro breakage issues, you are having knot issues. I never realized how much my knot strength sucked before fluoro, mono and braid mask poor knot tying, fluoro punishes it more readily. I tie a San Diego jam knot 5-7 turns, and only ever use Palomar knots, with a knot in the tag end on braid.

Read all the knot strength tests you want, but at the end of the day unless your knots wraps lay right every time you will have issues, and the SDJ knot ties perfect every single time. Beautiful, quick, simple knot to tie.

Mono (Big Game) on all moving type baits like cranks, Bladed jigs, spinnerbaits, etc.
Flouro (Invisx) on contact or finesse type baits, Jigs, worms, Drop shot, etc.
Braid (Power Pro) on frogs.

I've been trying fluoro for a few months. Previously was using cxx. I can't tell any difference in sensitivity. I have big game tied on right now also. Sensitivity feels the same. I haven't had any breakage problems but the memory could are a pain. When it is time to despoil, I am going back to mono. Tired of always worrying about which knot I can use and it being perfect.

I use copolymer for nearly everything, except frogs and punching. It is VERY strong, sensitive and does not have the memory of most mono's. I use McCoys Mean Green for everything,. except what I stated above. WORKS GREAT and if I get hung up, I tow the boat over with my 20# test line, too. Hope this helps.

Knots were not my problem with fluoro breaking, breaks were up the line above the knot. When you get a kink in your line, on the spool, it will often break where you had the kink. I use braid with mono leaders on spinning gear, and mono on casting gear, green Big Game recently. Braid is good on casting gear for frogs and punching heavy grass, but I personally do not fish a frog often or punch grass often, so for the little time I do, I just use a rod with mono. Like someone said, I keep it simple.

Use a more supple fluoro like Berkley vanish I use for my bladed jigs, spinnerbaits, and traps, not the vicious fluoro I use for my Texas rigged soft plastics with tungsten weights where outright sensitivity is desired.

All fluorocarbon is not created equal and you have to use the right like for the right job like anything else. The more sensitive lines are more brittle. Swimming stuff through cover with them is no going to work out well for sure. There was a learning curve to find what I liked and it wasn't what everyone else was saying to use at the time. I almost gave up too, but I'm glad I didn't. It has much better sensitivity, desirable line stretch properties from single hook baits and longer casts, and a possibly indistinguishable visibility advantage, but that's never my deciding factor.
