Surge brakes are locking up when braking. No issues with them while driving down road in reverse or drive, put second you hit the breaks it starts to lock them up and grind bad. I either have to figure out issue before thursday or disconnect them. Have to drive to Monroe end of this week... Any ideas TFF? its a 2012 EZ loader trailer has surge brakes on the rear wheels.

I'd buy a new actuator assembly and bleed them.I went through this and replaced everything but think the actuator was the culprit

Sounds like the brake shoes/pads may be worn down to the metal...

looks like i'm going to use one of those lock out keys to keep the actuator pin from sliding forward to engage brakes. Not going to have any time to have a legit fix this week.

Sounds like the brake shoes/pads may be worn down to the metal... Nope replaced them before last tournament season. These pads are good they stopped my truck dead in its tracks last night when they locked up.

Does it clunk when you start off? There is a shock absorber in the hitch that may be worn out causing it to go to full braking too soon.

I would get a tester and be sure you are sending power to the solenoid. It is the middle pin "receptacle" if you have the round connector on your tow vehicle. All the others are pins are around the circle. The middle "pin receiver" is the power to the solenoid. On some trucks, you can blow a fuse and not get power to that portion of the the plug.

If it is the shock it is a pretty easy fix, don't have to get into the hydraulic system.....not sure where to find one locally but trailer shops should have them. Pretty sure Mcgills in Lewisville would have it.

If it wasnt engaging them wouldnt my trailer brakes lock up in reverse I fixed this issue once by replacing a fuse on my truck. I have zero issue going forward or backward only issue is when i press on the brakes

When mine went bad the trailer would jerk went pulling from a stop and clunk forward fast locking the brakes when slowing/stopping. When not hooked to tow vehicle it was very easy to push the hitch in engaging the brakes. You could pull the shock off and see if it has any resistance like it should or if it collapses easily.
