I'm sure this has been discussed at length before, but I don't recall seeing anything about it recently. What do you all think about George Perry's World Record? Obviously there are a great many folks who think it's highly suspect. Should the record stand?

Some kid in Japan caught one bigger couple years ago, but since it was only 1 ounce over the current record they considered it a tie.

Just read up on that, didnt know that under 25lbs they require you to surpass the current record by 2 ounces.. weird

I'm pretty firmly in the corner that the record should not stand. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and Perry's fish doesn't even have the most basic evidence. There are no confirmed photo's of the fish. It's reported measurements don't make any biological sense. There also are not any physical remains. The fish is also nearly 25% larger than any other fish that has ever come out of GA. As far as I can remember, no independent witnesses could ever be located after the fact. The guy he was with when he caught it simply vanished from the face of the earth. The whole story is highly suspect in my mind.

Let it stand but everyone surely agrees the Japanese fish is bigger.

The one where my heart breaks is Dotty. WAY bigger, but hooked outsider her lip. What a heartbreaker.

Not to argue your point about the GA bass but "if" the record were to be amended/changed- how would we then determine a new "unaltered" record?? all of these lakes super stocked with trout or prawns(see the guy in Texas who's singular goal is a record bass) affect lakes "unnaturally" for a bass. not to mention the multiple cross breeding to create a "super bass" anyways. a bass from texas, florida or California or even japan(the tied record but most current) aren't even close to what can/could be called "an original unaltered bass". like PEDS in sports hard to find a "real bass" unless you are like in a northern lake or a random pond that hasn't been touched in 40 years. but def interesting!!

That's a big fish for sure. Maybe it's even Perry's fish. But what everyone does agree on is that is not George Perry in the picture. No one knows who it is. Maybe Jack Page the mysterious man who was supposedly fishing with Perry? Don't know, but that picture, the man, and that fish has never been conclusively tied to Perry.

I was gonna post that pic. It is true it was never substantiated this was Perry's fish. It is a giant for sure.

IMO, the world record is Dottie from Cali.

All records from the past are hard to prove using metrics that we use today, but I think it should stand, and I also know that no matter how much we debate or vote on whether it should or shouldn't hold up, it will remain the record until it is broken.

There are quite a few examples where old records have been overturned in the recent past. You can read volumes on musky World Records where this has happened. So I'm not sure we can say there is zero chance it'll be over turned.

I agree Dottie should give us all faith a bigger bass could be out there swimming. Here she is at 25lbs and change. A full 10% over the record. It's a shame she was foul hooked. An inch or two difference in hook placement and Perry's fish would be nothing more than a footnote in old books.
