I'm sitting here watching KVD in the Bassmaster pulling in fish with a jerkbait. He also has a good video on youtube where he talks about using this year round. I was under the impression that a jerkbait is most effective in colder water. Of course the water temps right now in New York are cooler than here in Texas but it's still summer. Even though KVD can get bites, any of you mere mortals use jerkbaits in the summer?

If the bass are targeting shad they will also hit a jerk bait. I keep one tied on as a follow up to a missed blow up on a topwater or buzz bait.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways with a fishing rod in one hand, 10# LMB in the other, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and yelling "Wow! What a Ride!

Thanks that makes sense. Sorry for the newbie question but how do you know if the bass are targeting shad? Is this seasonal or is this something you look for in the water?

I stole this image from Austin Kayak forum, but this is what you see on a graph when bass are actively targeting Shad!

I've also heard references to spaghetti and meatballs... Sounds like a Pack explanation to me!
