Really curious as to the various opinions of you guys about color on deep diving cranks. I was talking to a guy that works for Strike King at the airport today and I asked him the question and he said that the general opinion of the Elite BASS anglers is color really doesn't make much difference down at 20'.. its the action and sound of the bait. He said that most of the colors that the deep diving baits come in are more designed to lure in the fisherman than the fish.
I am no guru on deep diving cranks.. have only caught 1 fish on one but I probably have 10 of them. What is your opinion on color and deep diving cranks?
thanks

Most shad patterns look the same at 20ft. It's more about boat position and presentation

Agree ^^^^

I usually throw a citrus or chartreuse blue back depending on water color, I think action and sound of the bait play a bigger impact on catch ratio at 20ft plus than colors.

I guess if the water is Gin clear maybe it matter's more, but then you're probably not using a crank bait anyway. I don't think a detailed pattern matters much on cranks because of the speed at which most are fished. The deeper you go the less color matters as stated above.

I just read an article from Paul Elias, he says you need 3 colors, anything with Chartreuse to mimic Bluegill, Crawfish & Shad!

I read an article years ago in bassmaster on color changes in different depths of water. It was done in Florida in gin clear water. After around 15' almost all colors turned brown or brownish.

I noticed that Van Dam was throwing a yellow 10XD on Toledo Bend that he had taken a sharpie and put lines on the side of it, because the bass were feeding on sand bass. Made sense..

Most Texas lakes are not gin clear. There is no light penetration at 20ft. That's why it's best if you can bounce the bait off of something or make a lot of noise with the bait.

citrus shad. also had good luck with a chartreuse and dark blue back and orange belly is the water is stained up. Don't know what they call that color.

Anyone who has scuba dived can tell you about light penetration and color change. And the color change varies with the clarity of the water. The first colors to turn gray or Reds, followed by purples, then greens and finally blues. Black will stay black until almost no light as it absorbs all light. But the color of gray will vary depending on what the original color was. Lighter colors will be lighter colors of gray. This is why the deep ocean will appear dark blue. This is also one reason Black and Blue will catch fish in just about any color of water.

As stated above in most Texas lakes at about 15 ft. (plus or minus a couple of feet) it will turn jet black. Since bass's eyes have more rods than cones they can see in these waters better than we can, but vibration and noise become the number one attractant.

Maybe i should have worded my post better, he was basically stating that you do not need to spend a lot of time worrying about all of the different color variations of the 3 main colors, it is more about boat position, and making contact with the deep structure!

For what it's worth, this article was about deep cranking!

My Grand dad was the best Color-C-Lector I ever had. He could look at the water then tell you what color to throw. Used one one time to check behind him. He was spot on every time.
