What braid have you used that makes the least amount of noise? 20# or 30# test is what I plan to use.

Power Pro Super Slick

You can try this line. I'd say it makes the least amount of noise out of all the braided lines I've tried; and I've tried most of them. The Super Slick coating makes sure you get the best casting distance you can without digging into your spool and it also makes it go through your guides quietly. I notice a significant difference in noise with this line versus regular braided line. It's so much quieter.

Just curious, what difference does the noise make?

To be honest I love the sound of braid zipping through the guides!

Rhino68W: It's much more quiet in the water, so it makes a for more natural presentation; thus more bites. I've talked to a couple guides out at Fayette County who notoriously throw Carolina Rigs with their clients. They have all switched from braid to fluorocarbon as their main line because they are convinced that the sound braid makes in the water compared to fluoro, especially around cover, reduced the number of bites they got. So the same principle should go with braid vs. braid; the more quiet braid, side by side, should get the most bites.

Plus the added casting distance can and does make a difference in certain situations.

Not debating the line noise issue. I've landed a few big fish on braid and it is much noisier than mono or fluoro but...

How much noise do you think a Rattletrap makes compared to the line being pulled over brush or vegetation?

I like both the PP original and PP SS. The PP SS will def be quieter going thru the rod guides and may help you cast a little bit farther.

I'm not trying to say noise or braid for that matter is a bad thing by any means. Braid is a wonderful tool, but it does have an effect on your presentation just as anything else in your setup does, good or bad, depending on the situation and the presentation (think visibility, bait ROF, direction of fall, stretch vs no stretch, etc). They are all factors into what the fish is experiencing.

Can you help me understand your Rattletrap vs braid noise question though? Not sure if I completely understand what you're trying to ask, but comparing noise sourcing from a target (lure) and a noise coming from "nowhere" before a lure get's to the fish's presence is a bit apples to oranges in the way it's coming across to me.

You have some very good points Connor.

Here is a neat experiment I did in my backyard:

Jump in a swimming pool and let someone reel a Rattletrap through the pool. Now tell me if you can hear anything but the lure. Granted the line is not in contact with anything as the lure swims through the water but I think it will be very difficult for the fish to hear anything but the lure.

Now if a fish is sitting in a clump of hydrilla and the line is dragging over it for 50 feet before the lure gets to the fish, I could see where the fish would be alerted before it sees the bait. But then again how do we know what will trigger the fish to bite. Will it be the way the lure crashes into the grass and the way you rip it free? Would the same fish have bit if you had been using fluorocarbon?? Maybe...

There are so many variables in this sport and there are no hard fast rules. Conditions change every day and the technique that smashed them yesterday may not elicit so much as a sniff the next day. That's what keeps me going back.

My only issues with braid and cranks is when the line twists around the tip or gets buried in the spool, the shock is often enough to to snap braided line. I got tired of watching crankbaits sail into the trees.

If your're going to throw braid you need to be using a mono or flouro leader as a shock leader. That will solve your break off issue. Keeping a tight spool and a big enough braid will solve your digging in issue.

I was going to try out braid with crank baits so I want one that makes the least amount of noise. For some reason many times you will get fewer bites with certain techniques than you will with mono or fluorocarbon. I don't know why it matters to the fish but it does. Is it sight...they can see it and it spooks them? Well they eat an A-rig pretty well with all those wires so I don't think it is a visual thing, but I don't know for sure. Is it sound....does it sound strange to them? Who knows because they eat crank baits with rattles in them jigs with rattles so some sounds do not spook them. I have no idea why braid does this so I want to try one that is green in color and silent. It is just an experiment I am going to do.

The rod I am going to use it on has guides that wrap around the rod. Maybe that will help.

I have used braid exclusively on fixed spool reels. Sometimes with a leader...sometimes without. But it is only for finesse fishing (go figure). Lol. I am not pulling the line through stuff, so the noise isn't an issue.

I can say this....with fact...

I have tied a camera (water wolf) to a rod a few times that has 65lb power pro super slick. I was really suprised at the amount of noise the line makes. Also I was VERY surprised to be able to hear my speaking to a friend transmitted through the rod and line to a camera that was 60-70' away and in 20' of water. My guess is it is like the "two cans and a sting" phones we made as kids. lol. I could clearly hear my voices. I stopped using braid for moving baits that day. I cannot hear these sounds and voices when using other line types.

Power Pro Super Slick casts great, but be sure to add wraps to your knot.
Because it is so slick, knots tend to slip if they aren't tied very well.

If joining it to a leader with an improved alberto, use 10 wraps up and 10 wraps down.
If using a San Diego Jam, doubled uni, pitzen, or improved clinch to your hook, use at least seven wraps.
