Fished two days last week and the shad were spawning in the Pads. Shad of all sizes were everywhere, and Bass crushing them all around us. I have caught them many times with frogs, spinner baits, buzz baits, flukes, creature baits, squarebill, etc... in this same area. However, I could not get them to hit anything. I will add, I have never seen the shad as thick as they were last week. We ended up catching one 4 lber. dead sticking a white Senko. What do you in this scenario? Was there just too much bait?

I have found going exactly opposite of the color really works well. The blue gill color seems to pick up the strikes as the Bass will take out the unusual or other bait fish that are there for the eggs and etc.. A very slow presentation with the darker plastics, the 1.5 square bill in blue gill and the blue gill 1/4 oz. spinner bait has been my best producers.

Work the outer edges of the pads with the Super Spook Jr. in Chrome. Let it set, then make the 180 degree turns. Walking the bait has not worked.

I have seen cases where there is so much bait in the area it's hard for the bass to notice your lure. If you can't get them to hit a Swim bait/Swim jig, frog or spook or any other walking type bait. I would recommen a small 3-4inch flutter spoon. And fish it on the edge of the pad/grass line aggressively ripping it off the bottom! The weedless ones will work but in my opinion the original ones have a better cradle action. Extra wide gap treble hook will help it not get caught it grass as much. Bass will come along way to hit that spoon. And it's a lure that not a lot of guys are throwing any more especially in Shallow water 10ft or less.

Thanks guys, we tried some blue gill colored baits without success. The spoon idea is a great one! I will definitely give it a try when I see again.

We saw something similar to this. Got one on a white frog, but they were after the ones that flopped onto the pads, wiggled then fell off. Never thought about opposite color or the spoon, will give it a shot for sure.

Try a baby bass fluke, on a spinning rig with braid, skip it across the water along the edge of the pads. That skittering action along with the natural fall has triggered many bites for me when casting the lure will do nothing.

Bite was hard for me this weekend to. Fished two days, shad were everywhere I went. I was thinking that there was just to much bait

Try a clear spook. When they are that keyed in on bait they can be really hard to catch. I've found you have to fish something they can't see good. A fluke fished real fast, clear spook, a light colored spinner bait fished erratically, stuff like that. Sometimes I just give up on them and go somewhere else.

Looking at your screen name, did you try one of those? They used to be killer on schooling bass. I know it would be a little difficult working one in thick pads but out along the edges it should get em good.

I have also been faced with your scenario at Fork more than once where the bass were so keyed in on shad they would not hit any of my offerings. Very frustrating! Had them schooling around me splashing water on my boat as I frantically threw everything I knew to try at them. Finally got a few of them to hit a small jigging spoon fished fast just under the surface.

Ken,

good point, never even though about the Near Nuthin. Usually throw it in really clear open water. Great for schoolers for sure!

Did you try something that closely resembles the shad? When the bass are chasing schooling shad, the best bet is a bait that looks like a shad. Try a Shadalisous in a natural color on a 1/8th ounce weighted hook. If it's in the pads next time, be sure to use braid. Could also use a popper like a yellow magic in the open spaces between pads. A dying shad is an easy meal also. These look like one to a bass, although my attempt would be a weedless light weighted plastic swimmbait. Maybe a swim fluke in pro blue or the color I used last night in this same scenario. Don't know the name of the color, but it's similar to pro blue but is greenish/grey on top instead of blue. Swim fluke. Not a regular fluke. I had good success catching them on the outside edges of deep grass and pads a few days ago. Last night, they were in the hydrilla and pads. Way in em. So I used a fluke and a skinny dipper to get to em. Worked well for the limited time I had to practice last night. Started out last night with a Strike King 2Tap in natural shad. Hooked into and lost two right away...but they were in the slop too much to be able to use the red eye.

Steez,

We do use Braid in the thick stuff and 15 - 17 lb. Floro around the edges. We used several shad color and bluegill colored hard and soft baits. Including the Natural Shad squarebills. Did try a bone Yellow Magic, swimming a toad and a Rage Menace. Did not try a swim fluke or small swimbailt. And yes both mornings they were way back in the Pads, not much action around the edges other than Sand bass, They hit everything! We did manage to catch two 4 lbers. One dead sticking a white Senko and the other swimming a white Rage Menace.
