How does the red typically fish this time of year? Anyone have any tips they wouldn't mind sharing?

I figured as much. I'm actually going this time next year so I was wanting to get a head start on what historically would get me a few bites there

That's great, but it will be this time next year, as in May 2017... Are they usually still in the backwaters during May or are they in the river?

There are always fish in the backwaters. If the rains slow between now and then, it's possible the grass and pads make a return. Then I would spend all my time in the backwaters.
The better fish usually come from way back, not so much on the main river.

The main river is marked with standard river navigation bouys. "red right return" Don't run between the bouy and the shore like some do. I wouldn't run in the backwaters anywhere. Until you learn it. If the water is up next year you will have to watch for the wing dams on the main river. If the water drops most all of them are visible

As of right now I would just wait and check back closer to the time you are coming. There is no telling what the river will be like by next year. The sand bars are always changing and everyone will have to learn the river because with 2 years of flooding it will be a different beast.

With all the high water the last year, it will be new to everyone including us guys that fished it for years. Not just navigating but fishing as well!
