Several months ago I blew my motor which was a 2002 Yamaha 225 ox66. Before it blew I was running 70mph at 6000rpm. Instead of rebuilding it I purchased a used motor from a guy in Baytown that owned his own little outboard service deal. The new motor is a 2006 225 optimax that's was converted to a pro xs. He showed me the Mercury diagnostics test, the motor had 400 hrs an not one problem showed up. The guy before me idled most of the hrs and only had 11hrs at 5900 rpm. Also did a compression Test was 95-97psi on all cylinders. The guy we bought it from also installed the motor. Before I even took it out I knew the prop that was on it was way to small. The first run I did with the small prop the boat ran 54mph at 5900rpm. The next day I borrowed a friends prop which was a 26p 3 blade fury. That day I ran 62mph at 5700rpm. When I got back to the ramp I noticed the motor was mounted way to low. So I got home and checked the motor height and the motor sat 4.25 inches below pad I raised it up to 2.75inches below pad with my manual jack plate took the boat out again with the fury prop and the boat ran 54 mph at 5900 rpm and the water pressure is still 20psi so I know it's not to high. Yesterday I put brand new spark plugs in the boat and it's still running the same. I'm out of ideas. Just wanted to see if anyone else could think of anything else.

You need to start with giving all your setup info. Like, 2004 ZX225 10" jackplate 3.5 inches below pad running a clean 25T1 prop.

Isn't that a 3.0 figured you'd get at least 120 on compression.not knowing what boat you have I'd drop it to 3.25 and see what it does.

So is 95. Psi consider low compression. If so what causes low compression

It does die when I through it in neutral sometimes could that be from low compression too?

At this point for this problem I would not be focusing on compression because you are turning 5700-5900 RPM. Being able to turn a 26 Fury 5700 RPM with a 225HP on a 20 ft boat is good. You should be able to get the proper height from a Skeeter guy here or go to the Skeeter group on BBC and they will be able to help you out.

You put a Merc on a Skeeter. The Skeeter is rebelling!!!

Sorry about your bad luck. Are you sure it is a 225 pro xs powerhead?

Beings the rpm came up and the boat slowed down I would say the prop is too high out of the water. 2.75 sounds pretty high, I would set it at 3.5 below the pad and try that. After you run it you can raise it .25 at a time till the boat starts to slow down.
