We have a Skeeter SL210 20'6" fish and ski. A while back I replaced the 55lb motorguide trolling motor on it with a 70lb MinnKota edge. I thought this would give me a big boost in power because that 55lb Motorguide wasn't quite enough.

This new Minnkota doesn't even have as much power as the 55lb motorguide I had on it before. What gives?? Is the edge just not a very good trolling motor?

What he said^. It read that it runs on 24 volts. Need two batteries.

Yes make sure you are running it 24v. That being said I really didn't care for the edge 70 I had. Seemed weak unless I had it on the highest setting

Yep. Running two batteries on 24v. Blows my mind. I guess I need to go back to motorguide.

Have you actually measured the voltage at the two wires supplying power to the TM? That boat cold have any of many wiring issues that result in not getting 24V at the motor - even though you think you have wired for 24V at the rear. Also, what gauge wire is the TM harness built with? Undersize wire, poor connections, or unknown splices can readily cause issues. Minn Kota and Motorguide build very similar competitive models. There's usually an external reason for wide discrepancies such as you speak of.

Are the batteries in series or parallel?

I will check it today with a voltage meter. I hooked it up the same way I had the motorguide hooked up. I'm also using the same wiring. I just connected the new TM to the existing batteries/wires. But I will try the voltage meter.

There may be a 12 and a 24 wire at the bow, make sure the 24v matches with the positive on your TM. Check all of the wiring below the panel to make sure nothing is loose, or looped into itself. Check your breakers or inline fuzes near the battery too.

You're most likely going to have to rewire your plug. If you had a 50MG that is only 12V and bumping up to a 70 is going to have to be 24V. I hope that you can get it figured out.

I have a rough sketch of the wiring on my boat. It's a PDF. How do I post a pdf?

You can't post a pdf on here. Pull it up on your computer and take a picture with your phone then upload the picture.

Why the second positive from bat #1?

My boat has two red wires and one black wire coming from the trolling motor. This is how the other TM was hooked up. I just hooked this new one up the same way.
