A few buddies and me are going to camp out next month at Martin Dies Jr. State Park. Anyone ever camped there? I want to find some good fishing spots and some fun stuff to do while we are out there. We will be bank fishing and want to make the best out of the campout and catch a gang of fish. Bass, Catfish, or crappie, it doesnt matter. Any tips about the area appreciated.

All I vaguely remember about Dam B is do NOT take several cases of Schlitz Baby Bulls malt liquor and cherry vodka with you. Combine that with pouring down rain and collapsed tents and even the bathrooms can be freezing cold. NOT a good night...

The same thing happened to us, except with Jack Daniels at Tawakoni State Park last year. Oh the joys of camping!

Walnut Ridge or Hen House Ridge?

Bank fishing Steinhagen sux ... just saying. You'd be better off going to Rayburn and fishing the dam area.

Steinhagen is just a lake that gets drained every 3-4 years and is VERY shallow.

Thanks for the tips. I havent picked which site to stay yet. Which one would you recommend? We might just have to hit up Rayburn if the fishing sucks.

Boat fishing is available up the river. Hen House is on the deeper part(southern) of the lake. The parks are real pretty/nice. If I were going to try to fish the bank I might consider Magnolia Ridge Park on the west side of the lake and actually fish Wolf Creek. This is a great duck hunting lake and was built in the early 1950's. Bank fishing can be challenging anywhere but fish populations on this lake is not really good.

If you plan to fish along the bank in the unimproved areas be cautious the lake is full of Gators, however as long as they are not surprised they for the most part move away when they hear you.

Yeah we might just fish Rayburn instead of fishing there. I'm not too worried about gators or snakes. I've wrestled a few gators in my day and I collect venomous snakes so on that aspect were good. I leave them alone, they will leave me alone.

I've fished Dam B many times over the years. I'd stay on the Walnut Ridge side and rent a Corps of Engineers shelter. They're clean and have electricity and water and the restroom/shower facilities are clean too. You can rent a canoe there and fish. Much of the best fishing is where the Angelina and Neches Rivers meet and on up the Angelina. The water is clearer and there are a ton of sloughs to go back into. Bass should be on beds in another month up there. A white spinnerbait ought to get bit. Definitely take a camera.

Caught plenty of catfish when I was younger off the fishing piers located within the camping areas. Bass fishing would be easier by boat. When in doubt, a live shiner under a cork around cypress trees will get bit by something

We are going to be staying the weekend so I might just have to try some catfishing off the piers, canoeing around with some minnows and white spinner bait. Ill have to try out Rayburn as well. Thanks for all the information guys!
