My son and I are arriving Sunday March 6th and fishing full days on Monday through Saturday. We are staying at Lake Fork Resort. This will be our 5th year of coming to Fork. We always come over my son's spring break. The last 3 out of 4 years have been tough since we have generally hit cold weather when there. We have always managed to catch fish, and some really good ones. However, we have never gotten large quantities during the early, sometimes cold, time of the year. Luckily we found Monticello our second year and, WOW, did we have fun. Monticello has saved our bacon more than once even on horribly cold and crappy days.

My oldest son (26 years old) has a work conflict this year so it is me and my 15 year old son. My oldest son is quite a fisherman and has pretty much always laid out the game plan and guided us around the lake. This year me and my youngest will have to fend for ourselves. Lucking we have quite a bit of information from years past and lots of good spots to check. I have a few questions and wanted to know if some of you could help with our upcoming fishing trip:

1. The water has been way down over the last several years and this has become normal to me. The lake is going to look totally different now. We have always focused on shallower grass with deeper areas nearby and this has worked well. Roadbeds have always been good. Obviously timber with other structure nearby has done well also. Can I assume the same type of patterns or will the lake fish totally different over where it has been with the water 4' low?
2. Last year we had most of our fish on A-Rigs. Can I expect to use an A-Rig again? We came the week after the ice storm last year and started with 49 degree water on our Monday.
3. We have never really spent any time in the dam area. Generally that water was still pretty cold and we were always back in the creek arms looking for warmer water and grass. Are there areas around the dam part of the lake that could warrant our time?
4. We love lake Monticello and will surely be there again this time. Are there any other honey holes within 1.5 hours of Lake Fork that can provide a dandy fishing day for my son and I?

Thank you in advance for taking time to share your thoughts and ideas with me. We come to Fork one time per year and I want to make it the best I can for my son and I.

Winnsboro cold water lake and Welch hot water lake are both close to Fork and both good!

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Hit Welsh, it is a gem. In my opinion, it is way better than Monti.

I am not a Fork Expert by any means, but it is tough this time of year for numbers; however, we have had a very mild winter this year and by my estimates we are 3-4 weeks ahead this year than last moving into the pre-spawn, spawning time. Weather permitting I would hit the same spots of Fork you fished in years past, but may move a little closer to shallow flats. The lake has been up long enough the fish have adapted. The other lakes mentioned are all good lakes also.

Welsh is a gem but it will for the most part be post spawn around that time. Monticello is more of a hybrid cold/warm water lake now. It has not received as much pressure as Welsh and it will be in pre spawn/ spawn mode.
