what do you do to locate fish

This time of year; I'd head first to an isolated tree where one of the few creeks is heading into deeper water
Then, I'd go to other isolated trees heading deeper, looking for trees on drop offs/contour changes.

Can't go wrong with windblown points

Is there a rocky dam/rip rap? a drain or other structure by the dam?

Any other structure like a fishing pier or boat docks?

Is there a cement boat ramp dropping you off in deeper water?

Sometimes ANYTHING different can hold fish. What the lake looks like on the shoreline and at the water level doesn't mean much. You need to look at the lake contour map and find what would hold fish that you can't see. Channels next to flats. It doesn't have to be a deep channel. Some lakes a channel next to a flag is only 2-3 feet deeper. It's this kinda changes that can hold fish. But, it is usually different at every lake. If the lake is a shallow lake, the changes that hold fish will not be really obvious. But every lake has some kind of fish attracting area. A lake full of trees and stumps is just as bad. Not every tree is a bass house. Haha.

Look for different. Different lake bottom types. Does it go from silted to rock on an area? Does it go from chunk rock to pebble rock? Sand to silt? Those are things that the sonar shows. The bottom density. Some bottom types warm and cool faster. Some insulate and stay average temps longer. Good things to keep in mind during the scouting of a lake. Mark the waypoints as you see different types merge.

Also.. Vegetation in the deep water. Depth? Relation to flats and channels, vegetation type? Try the inside edge of weedlines. And the outside edge. Mark all the weediness in the waypoint.

Find all these things in a general area and fish it a LOT.

All depends on the time of year but you always need to fish the creeks regardless, especially if you have water moving.

Summer and Winter you will find me around those trees in the middle but spring and fall I'm in those creeks

You better get use to covering water too, those featureless banks have fish moving up and down them all the time, they just don't camp out much

I would sink some trees in several areas and come back in a month.

Graph the lake then choose the proper technique to catch the fish you found.
