Thinking of adding a large jig to my arsenal this season, I'm talking3/4-1oz. Anyone have much experience with it? Will my standard jig rod do? Do I need more or less rod sensitivity?

Flipping jig, swim jig, football jig, hair jig. What type of jig are you asking about exactly?

Flipping jig, like a hack attack jig.

rxkid2001 I can tell you the strike king hack attack 1 oz jig is by far my favorite jig to pitch and flip. I have used the 1/2 oz to 1 1/4 oz and it seems to produce the best. What I like about it, other than catching more fish, over the others is the feel and cast ability. When you check to see if your jig is still there or if a fish is swimming away with it, its a no brainer. It is good at the 2' range as well as the 30' range. It really shines at deeper water because it tends to get to the bottom faster which creates that reaction bite. It does tend to get hung up more than the 1/2 oz because of the bulkier jig head but as long as you are not setting the hook into the timber you can work it out pretty easy. Plus it acts more like a football head jig when it is on the bottom vs the 1/2 oz, and is alot easier to fish in heavy cover over the football head. As far as gear I use a medium heavy 7' 3" rod with a 7:1 gear ratio. I suppose you could go heavier but I have not found a need to personally. It does take a little getting use to but I think it will pay dividends in the long run, it has for me. But that is just my opinion.

Don't need a monster hook set for that big hook?

I normally hit them pretty hard but there is a fine line between sinking that monster hook in and wollering out a big hole in their mouth with that big hook. I do not loose many fish with it, when I do it is usually because I screwed up or they did not eat it very well (skin hook). That Gamakatsu hook is pretty sharp and will penetrate. I fish it with 20 lb fluorcarbon. But again that is just my opinion.

Good point on the hook sharpness, never thought about that. Just had the impression of a big meaty hook needing a lot of force to penetrate, a super sharp point negates that. Ever feel underpowered pitching it around on a MH?

Not with that jig. I do have a couple of heavy rods but I use them for big swim baits, strictly for casting.

I agree the Hack Attack is probably the overall best jig made for flipping. Others are better for certain things but the Hack does it all. Personally if I'm flipping a 1oz jig I'm doing so in grass or heavy timber such at Falcon. Grass is braid, timber is 25lb flouro. I flip that size jig on a 7'6" heavy mod fast rod. It's actually a Power Tackle 104.5. You could almost call it a Mag Heavy truthfully. I don't know if I'd try it with a MH but to each their own.

Ditto the thumbs up for the hack attack choice when it comes to flipping. With the title of "big" jig I was expecting a discussion of jigs with super-size skirts, but now I see you just meant "heavy". I am also starting to like the Gambler jigzilla head for punching with a skirted presentation.

I custom build the Baby Doll Jig in 3/4 and 1 oz. Numerous big Bass have come out of Mexico lakes on the big jig. I have never lost a fish or a jig in heavy cover using it. It will stand up every time you make a pitch allowing my floating claws to stand straight up.

What is your standard jig rod?

Caught my biggest fish this year flipping a 3/4 oz jig in 2ft of water in June and second biggest on the same jig in 18ft. I personally don't throw anything smaller than a 1/2 oz. but I always start with a 3/4-1oz depending on depth.
