I've been having bad luck losing lots of round dropshot weights and shakey head jigs with a ball-shaped head in rocks. The rocks are the size of the rock you would see on a COE dam along the shore of some of the reservoirs. Cast...rig settles to the bottom...take up the slack - snagged. Is there a better way or is this just the price of fishing on the bottom in areas with rocks?

football shaped jig heads are 'better' than round head, but those kind of rocks eat jigs at an alarming rate.

i usually try to bounce it along lightly without letting it settle down into the cracks. it takes a lot of concentration to feel when to lift the rod tip a little to keep it moving slowly along the rocks, but it seems to be a good crawfish imitator as far as how they move. on a windy day it can be really tough. highly buoyant crankbaits are also good, you just have to develop the feel for rock vs fish so you don't wedge it in there. usually a floating cb will back itself out if you don't wrench it into a crack.

anytime you are fishing rip rap though expect to get hung up some. most always if you move the boat back past the hang it will pop right out as long as you haven't set the hook into it.

an underutilized technique is throwing wacky rig worms along the riprap. it can be like watching paint dry especially in the wind, but it will get u bit especially when the bite is off on CBs or jigs.

hope that helps.

3/16th oz. is about as heavy as I like to throw on the rocks with smaller worms and baits. Tungsten is better than lead because it is smaller and provides more sensitivity. With that said, until you get a hang for the feel stay with lead or expect the need for deep pockets. Until you can figure out the feel of the rocks you will lose many rigs but eventually you can move to heavier stuff. Losing rigs is just the cost of learning and catching on the rip-rap bite.

The weight is relative to the type and size of baits you throw. A 3/8 oz. weight pegged to a 10 inch worm may be more snag-less than a 3/16 oz weight and a finesse roboworm. A wide beaver style bait might hang less than a zoom trick worm.

I have found that all shapes tend to wedge to some degree and that football was not really better or worse than others on true rip-rap. Lighter line, lighter weights and more sensitive equipment will save more gear because it becomes a "feel" thing that comes with experience. Good luck!

The good thing about rip-rap hang-ups is that if you can get on the back side of them they usually pull free as long as you have not wedgelocked them into the rocks.
