What do you see as oddities, curiosities or downright bewilderment(s) in the big game of fishing? I'll stick with large and smallmouth for now.

I read a lot, watch videos and fishing programs, mainly because I just picked up bass fishing last Autumn, and here is what perplexes me the most.

I see/read about "line," and how so many fisherman use 20, 30 and higher, heavy mono or flouro, or whatever, and up to 50 lb braid, usually on baitcasters. Then, I often see other fishermen using 4-8 lb whatever, usually on small spinning reels. Both types of fishermen bringin'em in good sized bass, or at least editing down the footage to the success stories.

Why so vast in line? The techniques of "reeling in" are truly that different?

Do you see oddities yourselves in the great game?

...wisdom through asking! Man will never learn if he does not ask, and appreciate the help! IN65

rods, reels, line, lures etc are tools that need to be used for the right job if that makes sense.

different techniques, water clarities, amount and type of cover, etc

it's "easy" to land a big fish on 8 lb test in open water

it's also not necessary to use 8 lb test in muddy water

I use the heaviest line I can get away with, personally

Some guys like finesse better

Well, yes, that phrasing makes sense, and yes, it's all "choice and experience." It just seems odd to me to vast difference, but it's all good.

Addendum: When I think of 4-8, I think of crappie, but maybe I study too much, and don't fish enough. Time to remedy that mishap!

...wisdom

TOW is how its done. you cant throw a 3/4 oz trap on 8 pound line for example. gotta match up the tools for the job needed.

The point of the post to see what oddities you cats see or experience. Line was mine. No legs here...it's all good. Way to aggressive Mother Nature here in DFW, so it's a full day of editing, and no fishing.

Addendum: Well, my tires need rotating, I might go do that.

My observation that seems "odd"? Baits......

A bass will likely live its entire natural life NEVER seeing, tasting, or eating a worm. Yet, a HUGE portion of the bait industry is centered around "worm" type baits. AND THEY WORK! Haha. Really well. I have caught the majority of my bass lately on a drop shot. Using, well, worms! Robo's to be exact. Worms poured to "look like baitfish"! bang

Go figure.
