Back in the day, I used to catch a lot of Falcon Lake bass on a lime green Pico Pop. On lakes and ponds with pads, the Hula Popper did the trick. I hardly even hear of those baits these days. Everything popper seems to be about either a Pop-R or a Yellow Magic, which poses a question. Since they look so much alike, is the Yellow Magic really any better than the Pop-R? From my perspective and experience, it catches more fish, but why? Is it because I throw it more often? Is it because I tie it on because I paid so much for it, and by golly, I'm going to catch fish on it? Is it a confidence or lack of confidence thing? I know full well that Pop-Rs catch a lot of bass. So do other brands.
I'm interested in hearing your personal experience and thoughts on this.

Pop-R has a more rounded face where the Yellow Magic is more oval. A yellow Magic comes out of the box able to "walk-the-dog", spit, pop or splash. Pop-Rs do not come out of the package like that. Requires some sanding to get it to "walk-the dog". So with the YM, you get a spook crossed with a popper. With a Pop-R you get a popper, only.

it's the subtleties about it. I think that the lip throws water and sound (better) Yellow Magic is what I throw when I reach for a popper.
you know, nothing wrong with seven men who met on the internet going for a swim together

There are many little reasons why the YM is better, but the bottom line is it just gets more bites and catches more fish. something about it makes them bite. And this is definitely not a confidence thing, I think you'll see this is pretty consistent across the board.

Wonder why they call them YM when they are not yellow? It probably has to do with ancient Japanese mythology.

Pop R to me makes more noise and throws a lot of water which will catch some fish but, Yellow magic looks like a small baitfish in a schooling situation trying to get away from a predator when it is worked properly. I used to think it was stupid to pay so much for a bait until my partner consistently out fished me when I was using a chug bug or Pop R. They also have thin but very sharp hooks, my strike to catch ratio is almost %100. They are my go to topwater bait now and once the water warms every spring, I don't go out without one tied on. I fished Roberts the day before it closed in terrible looking muddy water and caught several nice fish over the newly flooded cover.
See you on the lake and have a great day!

I have started trying more expensive lures the past few years and I have noticed that they usually perform better out of the package than their cheaper look-a-likes. It doesn't mean the cheaper one is inferior, it might just mean you'll need to work on the cheaper one to get it more productive. The problem is if you're not familiar with that type of lure, you might not know what it takes to get the bait working right, so you're not as effective while you're learning the technique. The differences can be subtle, like a Megabass jerkbait putting off just a bit more flash and stopping dead still after you work it compared to a Lucky Strike. Or, a Realis popper coming out of the package ready to walk as-is compared to a Repala that isn't. Sometimes the improvement is just a more durable paint job or sharper than average hooks. Doesn't necessarily mean they'll get more bites than a cheaper one, but it may mean less work on your part to get it to swim or walk right, which in-itself means more effective fishing time and better presentations when the fish are near, which might mean more bites. Crankbaits, I'm not so sure about because I can't see them work. But I'm sold on getting more expensive walking plugs, frogs, topwaters because I can see the improvement in action or quality over the cheaper brands (also, it's very rare to break off a topwater).

I think it has something to do with the sound, it makes a very unique noise comparative to the other poppers on the market. Also, having the ability to walk it like a spook almost can be very deadly. My main question I still haven't figured out is when to throw the larger size vs the smaller size. Ive caught more fish than I can count on the smaller size in Bone color. But I haven't ever been AS successful with the larger version, nor has it brought me any more larger bites (consistently).

Yellow Magic is the way to go. There's really no comparision. The spitting and walking the dog action of the Yellow Magic is awesome and very natural looking. Here's a video I put together from a few weeks ago of a good day I had fishing with a Yellow Magic. What makes it even better is that it's a Texas company!
