So I looking to upgrade my electronics. I have Lowrance HDS 5 at the console (recessed in the dash) and at the bow. I also added down/side scan. I will admit I have been a bank beater for the most part but this year I have made an effort to fish more structure and look at deeper water. So what do you think I should go with? I'm guessing I can leave my current transducers in place or do I need to replace them as well? I was told if I'm upgrading with Lowrance I can leave my current transducers in place and just plug them in to the new units. Will my transducers work with a Garmin unit? I'm looking at a minimum of a 10" screen. Do you think it will make a significant difference or am I wasting my money?

Buy the biggest you can afford or you'll be regretting it later. You can also leave one or both of the 5's to give you additional screens. I run a 12 and a 9 on the console and a 9 and 5 @ the bow. They are all networked together. Get the touch model in gen 2 or 3 and the structure scan module is built in. You will need to add a structure scan transducer at the transom but you can also still use your existing transducers.
Dont know about the Garmin, I would recommend Lowrance.
And yes it will make a difference.

I cant imagine the transducer will work for the Garmin. I use Hummingbird, but I think you should stay with Lowrance since you added the structure scan. You can find some good used deals here on the forums.

Is there a big difference between the gen 2 and the gen 3? I have found some good deals on the gen 2.

Not a lot of difference in the gen 2 vs gen 3.
Gen 3 has wifi built in and maybe a little faster processor.
Nothing that justified the extra expense for me.
The Gen 2 touch is awesome.

This is a serious question Danny. Whats the purpose of 4 fishfinders vs 2? Reason I ask is I have hsd 7 on console but I'm having trouble with transducer not reading depth on a plane. I still have the high speed transducer mounted in the hull from my hummingbird. I was going to install the bird on my kayak but since you posted you have 4 fishfinders. Now I'm thinking of putting the bird back in. Any advise?

The reason that I run 4 is so I don't have to split the screens so much that they get too small to see.
Here is the setup that I typically run.
Console:
HDS12 split screen with Chart and sonar. Or if I'm running a new lake or following trails of boat lanes, I'll split the Chart into 2 screens, then zoom in on one and leave the other out to see a bigger pic of the lake.
HDS9 split screen Structure scan down imaging and side imaging.

Bow:
HDS9 on a raised mount center over my tm pedal. I run a split screen showing chart and down imaging.
HDS5 flush mounted displays sonar.

This works for me but with the 4 graphs you can split up the screens however works best for you.
I hope this helps and if you have any other questions just send me a PM.
