I'd go with the manufacturer's recommendations on breaking in a new motor. Same thing really.

I was at plano marine and over heard the salemans tell a guy idle the first hour. He said then 1/4 throttle the next hour. 1/2 throttle the next 2 hours. 3/4 throttle next 2 hours and then full throttle for 45 seconds and back to nearly full throttle For the next 2 hours and then start pushing it a little more each time. He said anywhere from 10-12 hours breaking it in before letting her rip. Good excuse to go graph some areas at idle for a while.

Depends on motor. 4strokw versus 2stroke rings are different. The make rings seat correctly the motor needs to be heated up then brought back down in temperature.
