Lake Oviachic- April 15-18
One of our groups just returned from our third trip to Oviachic, Mexico. Mike and Dan are from Phoenix, AZ.. Dan takes all our groups from the far western states.
In three days of fishing they had 70+, 80+, and 90+.
All on lizards, jigs and brush hogs 2 to 10 feet deep up past El Capitan 2.
Danny caught an 8 lbs. 8 oz. bass and Mike had a 8 lbs. 11 oz.
Some of the guys there were talking about buzz baits being great with over 100 bass per day; but cranking and winding all day is just not what us old guys enjoy doing or can not stand up under that kind of casting each day.
Dan found a nice hump that came up to about 10 feet near the river channel. The last day they closed catching 90+ fish on and around that hump throughout the day. All of
our fish that day were 2 to 4 1/2 pounds. Jigs and watermelon baby
brush hogs seemed to be the key. They caught them on top in 10 feet of
water and all around the edges out to 18 feet.
They caught 92 on that last day but still couldn't top the younger guys who ended up with 94 on buzz baits. Couldn't have been a better finish for the last day of fishing.
The trip home was as smooth as it gets. The roads are in pretty
good shape and traffic was light. At the border there were five or six
bays opened and one car in each bay. 10 hours from the lake back to
Phoenix was an amazing trip.
A few noteworthy things:
1-The bigger fish were spewing eggs, so there are still some spawning fish.
2- Angel, along with his other duties, is a mean cook.
3- April 15 the lake is off-limits for the netters for the next three
months. Closed for the tilapia spawn. Fishing Oviachic with no nets is
truly a dream come true!
We are already planning our next trips, can't come soon enough and we invite you to come along!
