GEN 3 has touch screen as well as the buttons on the side. Also the chart updates faster when you zoom and are idling around. I believe you can zoom like on an iphone (pinch to zoom)

The Gen 3 also has the wifi module built in. Which allows viewing on an Ipad or smart phone.

Gen 3 also has the structure scan built into the unit itself. No need for an additional LSS-2 unit. All you need is the structure scan transducer.

Gen2 also has built in structure scan. Wifi, touch/pinch to zoom- rather than using the zoom buttons, and extra buttons are the real only diffence. You can upgrade the gen2 software to make the layout the same as gen3

Have had the new Gen3 12 for a couple months now. Installed TM150 Chirp transducer last weekend and WOW. It really picks up the fish. Fish I can't even see on structure is being picked up by Chirp sonar. I installed the update on Gen 3 unit and Gen 2 unit. It is causing some problems. Screen sticking and xing out of a screen problems. I would definitely buy the Gen 3 though. Maybe don't do the update. Spend the extra money and get the Airmar Chirp transducer. Have read all the comments about not much difference in shallow water. I am going to disagree. I though it was much better resolution and I was in 12 - 17'. Only downside to Chirp is it needs to be mounted on transom. I lost high speed pick up. Pretty much loose it before getting on plane.
