While Ray Roberts can be difficult to fish at times, I still have fair luck on the lake. When I went out this morning, I was thinking that I usually catch at least one to two bass 7 lbs. or more each year, wondering if I would repeat this year. Today was almost a repeat! I was fishing up in Indian and I threw my fluke to the base of a tree up and had a hit, but when I went to set the hook, it came out. Figuring it was a smaller fish; I re-hooked my bait and threw back to the same tree. Another hit! This time I got a solid hook set. After about a minute I wondered if I had hooked a catfish as I could not bring the fish to the surface. After a couple of minutes, I was able to see her! I got her to the boat and figured that I would need to use the net since she looked to be better than 8 9 lbs. I got a pretty good look at her and then she took one last run and she broke my line!!!! What a heart breaker! (Stren Fluorocarbon 12 lb. fresh re-tie). Maybe I can find her again!
I did land four additional bass, two 1 lb. and two 2 3 lbs. using the fluke and a crank bait.

Always a bummer to lose a toad after you get a look at it. Seems the big girls are really biting out there this year. I've caught one over 6 just about each time I've been out there this year... If only I could find more than one a day.

Agree, Bill. If you have one toad, you probably won't get another that day. Seems that when you catch a big one, the spot goes dry for a few days, at least that's my experience.

If only I could find more than one a day. i have the same luck ... catch several SOLID fish every time just hardly ever catch a solid limit...the big girls are there and with the recent stockings and now that the grass is coming back i have a feeling Raybob will be on the upswing for the next couple of years

One of my best days of Roberts, I got one right at 10.5 and one at 8 pounds. I broke another one off that was bigger then my 10.5 within 15 minutes of catching it. The guy in the boat with me got one that went close to 7 all of one tree line. I have never had another day like that since on Roberts...

We have been whacking them and had one pushing 8 on Sunday. Can't wait to get back on the lake for champs. Should be a toad fest.

12# test in around timber might not be a good idea. Stren makes a good line or used to anyway. I caught my PB on Fork (9#) using stren and that fish was in the tree wrapped up. With every lunge I could feel the effect of the tree and thought it would break.
I have since changed to Seaguar but still 20# test.

I have been using this setup for three years and this is the first time I have had the line break. In the last two years I have landed two 7's and an 8 with no problem. The biggest problem has been the knot. I started using the San Diego Jam Knot and have not had a knot failure since.
