Lost a tourney by mere ounces when my partner and I should have won by a few pounds had it not been for a really bad mental lapse on my part. Shaky head got hung up so I cinched my drag down on the spinning reel, broke it off, retied and threw back in only I forgot to loosen my drag back up. WHAM!!! BIG fish from the hook set. At least 6-7 pounds. I get her close to the boat, she surges straight down and SNAP - my leader breaks at the knot and I know IMMEDIATELY what happened and why. No, it wasnt the Bassmaster Classic but I dont like losing because of something I did wrong. A lesson learned the hard way and I feel like a shmuck.

So what lessons have you guys learned through experience that were either painful or that saved you from agony?

Check you line after each fish. When in doubt, re-tie

Don't beat yourself up, happens to everyone sooner or later. Problem though might have been the knot you use and/or too small a line for the cover you were fishing. You'll get the chance to catch another one. thumb

I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed.

I was fishing a derby and forgot to get the net out. Sure enough I set the hook on a donkey. Get her to the boat and shes right by the boat and she surges one last time....... bye bye. Could have netted her. Prolly win the derby with her. Instead, finish 13th I believe. bang

My painful lesson is that I really do not know how to fish. I get lucky sometimes but I do not think winning a tournament is luck. So when I win a tournament I think I can fish but then I find out on the next tournament I just got lucky. Hard lesson for me to get past.

Yeah we have all done bone headed stuff like that. Don't beat yourself up. I have done just the opposite; loosen the drag to pull line thru the guides to tie on a new leader, then forget to tighten it back. The next time I set the hook it was too loose and the fish jumped off on first jump while I was trying to set it. nuts

I can recommend something that may help you in the future. With a spinning reel if you need to snug down the drag to break off, just cup the spool with your hand to keep it from spinning while you are pulling. That way you can leave it the way it was and not have to remember to reset it. wink

I learned the painful lesson to always carry a spare trailer hub last week. 100 miles from home, and I was by myself so I got to unload everything out of the boat, into my truck, and leave the boat on the side of the highway. No one had a hub the size I needed in stock. All said and done I got to change the entire axle while wind gusts from semi trucks were nearly blowing the trailer off the jack stands. Got to lake and never got bit. hammer

Now that is what you could call a bad day.

Was sitting on RR a few years ago throwing a CRig and decided to call it a day but one more cast. Swung the line behind me and noticed something on the leader that turned out to be a knot. Tie on a new leader for one cast? Hell no, went ahead an threw it and hadn't hardly moved it when it got real heavy. Big fish, ran away then at the boat, made a run from front to back and when right in front of me the leader snapped. Over ten for sure and I knew what would happen when I made the cast. Some rides home are longer than others.

I have done it twice now. I get a bait hung up and I reel down to it and knock the tip insert out of the guide.

You can get the tips replaced at a reasonable cost while you wait at southwest parts and service.
